Octavo (8.25" x 5.5"); 316pp. Red and white dust jacket with $4.95 price intact; book in yellow cloth with mounted black band along fore-edge and white, blue, and black lettering. Red topstain. Jacket shows a few closed tears along edges, with scuffs down folds and over spine, some creasing and tiny tears at spine ends, and some general smudges to surface. Boards bumped at corners and spine ends, with fading along top and bottom edges and some dulling and smudging to cloth. Spine a bit cocked. Front board opens shakily, but binding is secure. A couple of smudges to fore-edge of textblock, but interior unmarked. Oates' first novel, following her 1963 debut with the short fiction collection By the North Gate.
