Condition: Very Good

Description: Stated Second Edition. End papers- both in front and back, have Ernest Shepard's delicate and beautiful illustrations of Christopher Robin, and Pooh. The bulk of interior pages are clean, bright and without writing; binding is firm. There are two interior pages with tears that were badly repaired with tape from a long time ago. Pages adjoined are discolored from tape. Two more interior pages after end papers, are foxed probably from paper inserted there in the past. There are a few stray, random but small pencil markings; no scribbling, nor crayon marks. Red cloth covered boards are clean and rubbed throughout. Boards are embossed with gold bordering and illustration of Christopher Robin in center. Pooh and Piglet are embossed on the back board and both illustrations are basically unmarred and shiny. Corners are lightly bumped and shelf wear along edges. Spine is foxed and has wear and light fraying at top and bottom but gilt title is still very readable and bright. Gilding on top edge of papers still shiny. Not only is this a classic for all time, but it is nearly 100 years old and in wonderful condition. A very lovely book to own.

Description: A lovely First Edition of the third book in A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh series. This one is special because it is inscribed on the half-title page: "Joan Taylor's Christmas book from her mother with great love 1933." Joan Taylor was the daughter of American composer Deems Taylor, one of the best-known musical figures of the 20th century and best known as the host/narrator of Disney's classic film, "Fantasia." With dark red cloth with gold titling and a gold imprint of Christopher Robin on the front cover, the book is in fine condition but for darkening on the spine and wear at the very edges. With gold gilt top edge and pink endpapers, the book is very square and solid and beautiful. It is protected by the original dustjacket that shows soiling and darkening and with two pieces (less than3/4" deep) missing from the ends of the spine. Overall a very special book. It's hard to believe that 80+ years have gone by since this book first arrived from the publisher.

In a January 1926 letter to his brother Ken he included it as number one in a list of "things which ought to be done": "A book of verses (about 15 done to date) to appear in 1927 or 1928" (Thwaite p. 293). By the time that Winnie-the-Pooh was published in late 1926, half of the poems for this third book were already complete. Alongside Milne's charming verse, this collection is also notable for including many illustrations of Pooh, Piglet, and the other nursery toys, even when unmentioned in the poems. John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, University of Virginia Press, vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-139, item IIIA; Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life, 1990, p. 293. Octavo. Original limp red calf, spine lettered and illustrated in gilt, pictorial designs to covers in gilt, gilt fillet to front cover, illustrated pink endpapers, edges gilt. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Christmas 1927 gift inscription to front pastedown. A couple of scuffs to leather, half-title and final leaf browned, occasional foxing and finger-soiling, minor loss to head of p. 73 and closed tear to fore-edge of p. 77 (not affecting text). A very good copy.

Description: First trade edition of A.A. Milne's Now We Are Six, bound beautifully by Bayntun (Riviere) of Bath, retaining the original cloth covers and an endpaper (with 1927 gift inscription) as the rear endpapers. All protected in a handsome clamshell cloth hardcover case. About the Work - The third work of Milne's to include Winnie the Pooh and his friends, the 1927 Now We Are Six consisted of 35 verse poems; eleven of the poems include illustrations from Winnie the Pooh's world. About the Provenance - The pink front endpaper was transferred to this fine binding, and reads, "From Enid/25-12-27". About the Bindery - "Riviere founded his bindery in Bath in 1829, and George Bayntun followed his example in 1894. Bayntun-Riviere is now the last of the great Victorian trade binderies still in family ownership and prides itself on continuing to bind entirely by hand" - Website Physical Attributes - Clamshell measures approx. 20.5 x 14 x 2.5 cm. Book measures approx. 18.7 x 12.5 x 1.8 cm., octavo. Cloth hardcover clamshell case with the title in gilt on red morocco on the spine; felt lining protects the book within. Full morocco leather binding of the book, red. Front board with five medallions from illustrations within the book, all of Christopher Robin. Also, title and author in gilt on front board. Spine with five raise bands, four compartments with a central floret in gilt, and two with the author and title in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. At the rear, one example of the pink original endpapers was retained. Also, at the rear, the original cloth boards and spine have been retained, each pasted to a blank unpaginated endpaper added by the bindery. Condition - See pictures. Really, a beautiful copy. I'll nit-pick because I know those enjoying this quality of book are discerning. Clamshell has the slightest fading to spine from sunning. If I turn the binding to the light I see a few of the lightest and smallest scuffs, and several small tiny bumps under the leather that were from the bindery. The original cloth binding had a scuff mark on the rear board. The spine has some visible glue around the edges of where it was pasted to a blank endpaper. Only one of the original endpapers exists, the front one with the written dedication from 1927. But, beautiful and bright. The text block looks as though it was never read. The binding has been remarkably well preserved. The gilt edges are perfect. 700 grams

Description: A Near Fine book in Very Good+ jacket. Original red publisher's cloth stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. The lower board just a bit bowed. Cloth bright and unfaded. Jacket Very Good+ on account of a small chip at the crown and slight toning to the spine. A charming copy of this Winnie-the-Pooh children's classic. Now We Are Six is a collection of poems that is part of the larger Winnie-the-Pooh imaginative world even though these poems are mostly children's verses. Milne and illustrator Ernest H. Shepard still pepper the book with written and illustrated allusions to the Hundred Acre Woods, hence this post-script from the volume's introduction: "Pooh wants us to say that he thought it was a different book; and he hopes you won't mind, but he walked through it one day, looking for his friend Piglet, and sat down on some of the pages by mistake." Overall, a bright copy with a very clean interior. Now We are Six is a collection of thirty-five children's poems and verses that comprises the third of four volumes in The Pooh Books, Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends of the Hundred Acre Wood. Like the rest of the books in the series, Milne wrote Now We are Six for Anne Darlington, the daughter of family friends whom both families hoped would marry Milne's son Christopher Robin; while the first Pooh book When We Were Very Young was dedicated to Christopher Robin, Now We Are Six is dedicated to Darlington. As Milne alludes in his introduction, "We have been writing this book for three years. We began it when we were very young and now we are six." Although only a few of the poems feature him, Winnie the Pooh frequently appears in Shepard's decorations. As Milne explains, Pooh "thought it was a different book; and he hopes you won't mind, but he walked through it one day, looking for his friend Piglet, and sat down on some of the pages by mistake."

Very small/light blemish to top right corner of rear cover. Top page edges gilt (gold). Decorated/illustrated endpapers and pastedowns, 102 numbered pages. Although it shows wear and has faded over the years it certainly has protected the book well. The bookplate of Theodore Zarifi is present on the verso of the front endpaper. The information I found on the internet is as follows: (Name Colin Richard Theodore Zarifi, Birth 24 Feb 1917 Death19 Dec 2001, Baptism23 May 1919, St Sophia, Moscow Road, Bayswater, London, England, Note 1Greek Gazette describes him as the son of Alexandra Th. Zarifi (1866-1932). However, he was the son (almost certainly illegimate) of Fanny Zarifi (b. 1891) and adopted by his grandmother Alexandra whose will names him as Colin Richard Theodore Zarifi. God-parents Alexandra Zarifi. Note 2 Presumably the Colin Zarifi who at one time lived at Coledane, Kent, who served on General Committee of the Kennel Club in 1947, was a renowned expert on several breeds of dogs, who had interests in South Africa, and lived for some time in Monte Carlo. Father--- [Zarifi] MotherFanny (Theodore) Zarifi (1891-)) The designer of the bookplate is "Acheson Bachelor F." whose name appears in small lettering just below the engraved bookplate. This book is also signed and inscribed by Colin Zarifi "To My Dearest Little Daughter Micaela, All The Love in the World from Dad". Please see my listing for "The House at Pooh Corner" also a book from the collection of Colin Richard Theodore Zarifi.

Description: First edition, first impression, of the third of the Winnie-the-Pooh books. As noted by the dust jacket blurb, "Winnie-the-Pooh, perhaps an inch more round the waist, makes an occasional appearance". Following the success of When We Were Very Young, Milne began planning a second book of poetry for children. In a January 1926 letter to his brother Ken, he included it as number one in a list of "things which ought to be done": "A book of verses (about 15 done to date) to appear in 1927 or 1928" (Thwaite). By the time that Winnie-the-Pooh was published in late 1926 half the poems for this third book were already complete. Full of Milne's charming verse, this collection is also notable for including many illustrations of Pooh, Piglet, and the other nursery toys, even when uncalled for by the poems. John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, University of Virginia Press, vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-139, item IIIA; Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life, 1990, p. 293. Octavo.
