There is some offsetting to the endpapers typical in a book of this antiquity but the text block is bright, tight and clean. a lovely copy of a scarce book. The verses and pictures in this book first appeared in 'Punch' magazine. Edward Verrall Lucas, CH (11/12 June 1868 – 26 June 1938) was an English humourist, essayist, playwright, biographer and publisher. Born to a Quaker family on the fringes of London, Lucas began work at the age of sixteen, apprenticed to a bookseller. After that he turned to journalism, and worked on a local paper in Brighton and then on a London evening paper. He was commissioned to write a biography of Bernard Barton, the Quaker poet. This led to further commissions, including the editing of the works of Charles Lamb. Lucas joined the staff of the humorous magazine Punch in 1904, and remained there for the rest of his life. He was a prolific writer, most celebrated for his short essays, but he also produced verses, novels and plays. From 1908 to 1924 Lucas combined his work as a writer with that of publisher's reader for Methuen and Co. In 1924 he was appointed chairman of the company. In 1904, while in the middle of his work on Lamb, he joined the staff of Punch, remaining there for more than thirty years. Lucas introduced his Punch colleague A A Milne to the illustrator E H Shepard with whom Milne collaborated on two collections of verse and the two Winnie-the-Pooh books. It is little wonder therefore that Lucas should combine his talents with Shepard's on several books for children and this satirical look at the counties and people of the English counties. This book reinforces the fact that Shepard was one of our finest draughtsmen when it came to pen and ink illustration. Ref Z1

MILNE, A. A.. The House At Pooh Corner With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.. London: Methuen & Co., 1928, 1928.

Price: US$3778.55 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, of the final Pooh book, featuring the first appearance of Tigger. Milne had bought his son a stuffed tiger, "Tigger", and told Shepard that he was longing to see the illustrations for this new character, who would become one of the author's most popular creations. "The House at Pooh Corner is probably now the most loved and popular of all as it introduces Tigger and the game of Poohsticks" (Thwaite, 1992, p. 109). Published on 11 October 1928, it was received by critics with a delight tinged by sadness: "the Times Literary Supplement congratulated Milne on avoiding 'the temptation to repeat his successful formula mechanically', though it was 'sad to see the stories end'" (Thwaite, 1990, p. 336). Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life, 1990; Ann Thwaite, The Brilliant Career of Winnie-the-Pooh, 1992. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in pink morocco, spine lettered and decorated in gilt with pictorial centre tools, raised bands, single rule to boards, multiple decorative blocks to front board, twin rule to turn-ins, floral endpapers, gilt edges. Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent copy in a fine binding.

Price: US$4000.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Crown 8vo, 7 1/2 x 5 in (192 x 127 mm), pp. 178, full-page and text illustrations. Original pink cloth cloth, gilt ruling and stamping on the front board with an illustration of Christopher Robin and Pooh, gilt lettering on spine, top edge gilt, rest uncut; illustrated pink endpapers with panorama and characters in silhouette, with light offset from dust jacket; dust jacket with very slight dust smudging at top edge and spine panel somewhat sunned, else fine. [Haring-Smith C108; Cutler-Stiles p. 116]. The third of A. A. Milne's charming books for children, The House at Pooh Corner begins with "One day with Pooh Bear had nothing else to do, he thought he would do something, so he went round to Piglet's house to see what Piglet was doing." Some of the chapters had appeared -as early as December 1926- in publications like the Evening News (London), The New York Evening Post and The Charleston (SC). This copy is the FIRST EDITION, with a scarce, near fine dust jacket. It is illustrated with the enchanting drawings of Ernest H. Shepard, whom Milne had met as they both were contributors to Punch. Their collaboration spanned many projects and was fundamental to the success of the series. On November 28, 1928 the New York Times wrote "The characters could easily come from adult fiction; the world of the forest is a miniature version of the real world." And London's Times Literary Supplement stated "In deciding to close out the Pooh saga, Milne has wisely avoided the temptation to repeat this successful formula mechanically. His books succeed because of their fresh illogic and simplicity. Yet it is sad to see the stories end. The world of 'House at Pooh Corner' is self-contained and so its problems seem more real that those of 'Winnie-the-Pooh'." (13 Dec. 1928, p. 985).

Milne, A.A.. When We Were Very Young. Winnie the Pooh. Now We Are Six. The House at Pooh Corner. Methuen, London, 1928.

Price: US$4000.00 + shipping

Description: First Editions. Illustrated by E.H. Shepard. 4 vols. Sm 8vo. The Four Pooh Books in First Editions. First editions of Milne's wonderful "Pooh Quartet,". "Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame" (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day. 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]. and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch" (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in "a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal" (DNB). When We Were Very Young first edition, second issue as usual, with page ix numbered (any first edition copy is exceedingly scarce). With vintage advertisements-testaments to Pooh's perennial merchandising appeal-laid in to The House at Pooh Corner. A most desirable first edition set of four cherished childhood classics. Milne, A.A.; Shepard, Ernest H.. The Pooh Books: WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG; WINNIE THE POOH; NOW WE ARE SIX; THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER. Methuen, London, 1928.

Price: US$15000.00 + shipping

Description: A beautiful collection of first editions of the Pooh Books, all in original dust jackets. In 1933 Compton Mackenzie described the publication of the first Pooh Book, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG as marking "an epoch as positively as any children's book has ever marked one. It is not extravagant to surmise that a distant posterity may find in that volume of children's verse a key with which to unlock the present more easily than with any contemporary novel, poem, or play" (quoted in Thwaite). The series is an evocative reflection of English childhood in the 1920s, yet transcends the time and place of its making for each new generation to discover and fall for. 4 volumes, 7.5'' x 5'' each. Blue, green, red and pink cloths. In original color printed dust jackets. Top edges gilt. WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG has page ix, not the very rare first state. Housed in custom cloth covers with leather spine labels (VERY YOUNG label misdated 1926). Books solidly near-fine or better, with some offsetting around the firm hinges; ink gift inscription in VERY YOUNG, POOH CORNER with slight lean. Jacket of VERY YOUNG with light chipping at spine extremities, touch of expert repair to head, and faint stain around upper joint; jackets of WINNIE and SIX are sunned on spines with a bit of wear to heads of spines (barely visible repair on SIX); POOH CORNER jacket stunning. Overall near fine in very good to near-fine jackets.

Description: Complete set of first editions of the Pooh Books, all in original dust jackets, with WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG signed by Milne and Shepard. In 1933 Compton Mackenzie described the publication of the first Pooh Book, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG as marking "an epoch as positively as any children's book has ever marked one. MILNE, A. A.. The House at Pooh Corner. Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.. London: Methuen & Co., 1928, 1928.

Price: US$44830.23 + shipping

Description: Signed extra limited edition, number 15 of 20 large paper copies, printed on Japanese vellum and bound in vellum, signed by both the author and illustrator. This is the most luxurious and exclusive issue of the various formats issued of the first editions of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh books, and features the first appearance of Tigger. Milne had bought his son a stuffed tiger, "Tigger", and told Shepard that he was longing to see the illustrations for this new character, who would become one of the author's most popular creations. In the opinion of Milne's biographer, Ann Thwaite, "The House at Pooh Corner is probably now the most loved and popular of all. It introduces Tigger and the game of Poohsticks." (Thwaite, The Brilliant Career of Winnie-the-Pooh, p. 109). Published on 11 October 1928, The House at Pooh Corner was received by critics with a delight tinged by sadness. "The Times Literary Supplement congratulated Milne on avoiding 'the temptation to repeat his successful formula mechanically', though it was 'sad to see the stories end'" (Thwaite, A. A. Milne: his Life, p. 336). The book was published in the UK in three issues: the present extra limited issue of 20 copies bound in vellum, a limited issue of 350 copies on large paper, and a regular trade issue. John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, Vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-39, item IVC; Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne. His Life, 1990; Ann Thwaite, The Brilliant Career of Winnie-the-Pooh, 1992. Quarto. Original full stiff vellum with yapp edges, front cover lettered in gilt. Housed in a custom black morocco folding box. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Minor foxing to inside edge of vellum, covers very slightly bowed; a near-fine copy with unopened gatherings.
