Description: TWELVE SONGS FROM PLAYTIME AND COMPANY Words by E. V. Lucas. Music by Herman Finck. Methuen & Co, London 1926 First Edition 30pp Hardback Music Book. This copy is in fine bright, tight and unmarked condition. The unclipped dustwrapper is a trifle dusty and has some edge wear to the top but is still in remarkably well preserved condition for its age. E V Lucas was a popular and prolific author who could turn his hand to almost any subject with aplomb. He wrote knowledgably about Cricket, John Arlott considered his collection of press pieces to be the finest cricket writing he had encountered. He wrote humorous pieces for 'Punch'. He was born in Eltham, Kent into a Quaker family, and educated at Friends School in Saffron Walden. He worked first in a Brighton bookshop and then on a Sussex newspaper followed by The Globe; rising without university education to the Punch 'table' in 1904. He became a prolific writer, providing extensive content for Punch and a column "A wanderer's notebook" for The Sunday Times. From 1924 he was the Chairman of Methuen Publishers. He was responsible for A. A. Milne teaming up with E. H. Shepard for the Winnie-the-Pooh books. This did not stop him from penning a collection of children's poems entitled 'Playtime and Company' which was illustrated by E H Shepard. and published in 1925 a year after 'When We Were Very Young' the first of Milne's Winnie the Pooh books. This piece of music came from a substantial library amassed by Maude Beerbohm Tree and later added to by her daughters Viola (1884-1938 and Felicity (1894-1978) Helen Maud Holt (5 October 1863 – 7 August 1937), professionally known as Mrs Beerbohm Tree and later Lady Tree, was an English actress. She was the wife of the actor Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the mother of Viola Tree, Felicity Tree and Iris Tree. After early stage appearances beginning in 1883, Mrs Tree married and established a theatrical partnership with her husband, in which they appeared in revivals of classic plays and productions of new plays, first at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket and then at Her Majesty's Theatre. Her performances in serious roles were well received, but she was most celebrated for her work in comedy, from Shakespeare to new works by Wilde and others. After her husband's death in 1917, Lady Tree continued to act steadily for almost two decades more until towards the end of her life, in plays and some films, making her last stage appearance in 1935. This is just one of a great many pieces of music and scores that I am selling from this collection on this site. Ref T1

Description: First edition of this children's classic. Octavo, original publisher's cloth with gilt decorations to the spine and front panel, top edge gilt, cartographic endpapers. illustrated with line drawings by Ernest H. Shepard. Near fine in a good dust jacket. “Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh has been considered a classic of children’s literature almost since its publication” (Cooper & Cooper). In 1925, A.A. Milne purchased “a Sussex farmhouse for use as a weekend and holiday alternative to the family’s London home… [that would] provide the setting for the stories he now started to write about [his son] Christopher’s toys… Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner [its companion volume, published 1928] are, on their own terms, more successful as works written for children than anything else produced during children’s literature’s Golden Age” (Carpenter). “Ernest H. Shepard’s illustrations, modeled after the actual toys, show character and movement in simple line vignettes, which add so much to the books that most people consider them to be inseparable from the texts” (Silvey).

MILNE, A. A. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) Weeks Before the Publication of WINNIE-THE-POOH. 29 September 1926, (London), 1926.

Price: US$3125.00 + shipping

Description: A two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) on both sides of 5-1/2" x 7-3/8" personal stationery to "My dear Sir" [Vincent Seligman]. Written just weeks before the publication of Milne's most famous work, WINNIE-THE-POOH. This fine letter offers insight into Milne's sharp sense of humor and includes indirect references to his most famous book. Milne refers to a person in his letter as a "cygnet" (a young swan), a reference which may have been in mind as Winnie The Pooh was a blended name created by Milne, being a combination of the name "Pooh," after a cygnet swan they met on holiday, and "Winnie," a black bear cub he often saw at the London Zoo. There is also a lighthearted poke at his publisher, Methuen. In part: "I have arrived safely at the house to which you sent me, and think that I shall like the situation. I wanted to begin a serial story for the DAILY MAIL at once, but the man here said 'No, there's a letter we must write first,' and I said 'Oh, I see,' and began writing 'Dear Methuen,' but he snatched me away from the paper, and said it wasn't that sort of letter at all, which disappointed me rather because I thought I had got a literary situation. But he promised me we should do some poetry afterwards, and I said 'All right.' And of course when he began 'Dear Vincent,' I said 'Oh, know that man well; let me write the letter, while you get the ink off your hands.' He was terribly pleased with me, and I'm to keep on saying 'Thank you' until I run out of ink. But I really am to say 'Thank you very much. Assuring you, Sir, of my respects, and again thanking you for obtaining me this literary situation which I have always wanted from a cygnet so to speak. Yours faithfull [sic] The Pen. P.S. It was his fault about the ink, not mine. T.P. P.P.P. Now we are going to practise his signature: A. A. Milne. P.P.P.S. He says that's the best he's ever done." A delightful letter. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. The cloth and gilt still sharp and fresh. MILNE, A. A.; E. H. Shepard; H. Fraser-Simson.. Teddy Bear and other songs from "When We Were Very Young".. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, & Ascherberg, Hopwood & Crew, Ltd, 1926, 1926.

Price: US$4770.09 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, out-of-series copy of 100 copies signed by Milne, Shepard, and Fraser-Simson on the limitation leaf, and additionally inscribed by the publishers for the composer "This is a presentation copy for H. Fraser-Simson, Esq." Harold Fraser-Simson published six volumes of his musical settings of the verse of A. A. Milne and, as noted by Thwaite, "his settings became very familiar through the wireless" (Thwaite, Brilliant Career, p. 61). When the verses for When We Were Very Young first appeared in Punch, Milne was approached by numerous composers wishing to set them to music. He chose Fraser-Simson who was his neighbour in Chelsea and the composer of the phenomenally successful musical The Maid of the Mountains. There would eventually be 67 songs and Milne noted that "the music is exactly right" (Thwaite, p. 272). When Songs from "Now We are Six" was published in 1927, Daphne Milne suggested a sound recording of three of the songs on the HMV label. "Down by the Pond", "The Engineer" and "The Friend" were sung by Christopher Milne, accompanied by the composer. "Us Two" was also recorded, but recited by Christopher without accompaniment. One of Christopher's cousins described the recording as "the unacceptable face of Poohdom" (Thwaite, p. 329), but the record does preserve Christopher Robin performing three of Fraser-Simson's settings of Milne and "giving the performance all he'd got" (Thwaite, p. 329). Ann Thwaite, The Brilliant Career of Winnie-the-Pooh, 1992; Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne. His Life, 1990. Large octavo. Publisher's blue cloth-backed boards, front cover with paper label lettered in dark blue. Illustrations throughout by E. H. Shepard. Extremities a little worn, some occasional minor foxing, gatherings unopened: a near-fine copy.

Price: US$7504.94 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A beautifully bound set of A A Milne's classic children's works featuring his anthropomorphic bear Winnie the Pooh. From the library of Julian's Park, which was once home to the Socialite Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Comprising early editions of these works. 'Winnie The Pooh' is a second edition of 1926; 'House at Pooh Corner' is a third edition of 1929; 'When We Were Very Young' is a Nineteenth Edition of 1929, 'Now We Are Six' is a fifth edition of 1929.Milne was a prolific author and is now best-remembered for his creation of Winnie-The-Pooh and his many friends. This set of best selling works comprises of the first volume of stories solely regarding Pooh, 'Winnie-The-Pooh', and two poetry collections, 'Now We Are Six' and 'When We Were Very Young'. 'Now We are Six' contains thirty-five verses, eleven of which are accompanied by illustrations featuring Winnie-The-Pooh. 'When We Were Very Young' contains forty-four poems, including 'Teddy Bear' which, upon its initial publication in 'Punch' magazine, was the first literary appearance of Winnie-The-Pooh. The introduction to 'When We Were Very Young' implies that the narrator may be Christopher Robin. These works are illustrated by E H Shepard, a popular twentieth century illustrator whose pen and ink drawings were featured in all of Milne's works.Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with their binder's stamp to the front pastedown. All volumes are in a half calf binding, with gilt tooled silhouettes of the characters Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit and Piglet to the spines. The boards are covered in charming paper which has a repeated animal motif. This same paper is used for the endpapers. Pleydell-Bouverie was a close friend of Stanley Bray, who worked at the firm for over 60 years. He often bound books for her as gifts. From the library at Julians Park, the former home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field). Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey was also alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII. She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the spines and extremities. Fading to the spine of 'When We Were Very Young'. Binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper, 'Sangorski and Sutcliffe'. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots. Very Good

Winnie-the-Pooh is a 1926 children's book by English author A. A. Milne and English illustrator E. H. Shepard. The book is set in the fictional Hundred Acre Wood, with a collection of short stories following the adventures of an anthropomorphic teddy bear, Winnie-the-Pooh, and his friends Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, and Roo. It is the first of two story collections by Milne about Winnie-the-Pooh, the second being The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne and Shepard collaborated previously for English humour magazine Punch, and in 1924 created When We Were Very Young, a poetry collection. Among the characters in the poetry book was a teddy bear Shepard modelled after his son's toy. Following this, Shepard encouraged Milne to write about his son Christopher Robin Milne's toys, and so they became the inspiration for the characters in Winnie-the-Pooh. The book was published on October 14, 1926, and was both well-received by critics and a commercial success, selling 150,000 copies before the end of the year. Critical analysis of the book has held that it represents a rural Arcadia, separated from real-world issues or problems, and is without purposeful subtext. More recently, criticism has been levelled at the lack of positive female characters (i.e. that the only female character, Kanga, is depicted as a bad mother). Winnie-the-Pooh has been translated into over fifty languages; a 1958 Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, was the first foreign-language book to be featured on the New York Times Best Seller List, and the only book in Latin ever to have been featured. The stories and characters in the book have been adapted in other media, most notably into a franchise by The Walt Disney Company, beginning with Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, released on February 4, 1966 as a double feature with The Ugly Dachshund. It remains protected under copyright in other countries, including the UK. (Wikipedia) First edition of the signed/limited edition, this being 119 of 350 numbered copies.

Accompanied by the magical drawings of Ernest H. Shepard, whom Milne had met as they both were contributors to Punch. Their collaboration spanned many projects and "Milne was so aware of the extent to which Shepard's drawings contributed to the success of Winnie-the-Pooh that he arranged for him to share in the royalties." MILNE, A. A.. Winnie-the-Pooh. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.. London: Methuen & Co., 1926, 1926.

Price: US$22260.40 + shipping

Description: Signed limited edition, number 288 of 350 large paper copies signed by both Milne and Shepard, printed on handmade paper. Limited signed editions of the first Winnie-the-Pooh story book are increasingly scarce. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, published in 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's teddy bear, bought at Harrods for Christopher's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear and later renamed Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor. It was published in the UK in three issues: an extra limited issue of 20 copies bound in vellum, the present limited issue of 350 copies on large paper, and a regular trade issue. This is the first title of the series to be issued in this format: there was no equivalent issue of the first book, When We Were Very Young (1924), as the magnitude of its success had not been anticipated. John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, Vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-39, item IIB. Small quarto. Original dark blue cloth-backed blue paper covered boards, front cover with paper label lettered in black, edges untrimmed. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard, folding map at end. Browning to free endpapers, a near-fine and crisp copy. Dust jacket spine toned with head and foot slightly rubbed, minor closed tear to front panel, a very good and attractive example.

SHEPARD, Ernest H. (illus.); MILNE, A. A.. Original artwork for Winnie-the-Pooh: two ink drawings from "Piglet Meets a Heffalump".. 1926, 1926.

Price: US$139922.53 + shipping

Description: The two concluding illustrations from chapter five of Winnie-the-Pooh ("In which Piglet meets a Heffalump") and both published on page 68 of the original 1926 Methuen edition. The first drawing shows Christopher Robin eagerly jumping by a concerned Piglet (to accompany the text "'Well,' said Christopher Robin, putting on his shoes.") The second drawing shows Winnie-the-Pooh with his head stuck in a jar of honey (to accompany the text "Crash went the Heffalump's head against the tree-root.") E. H. Shepard sold his original drawings for Winnie-the-Pooh at an exhibition held at The Sporting Gallery, Covent Garden, London, 26 November to 21 December 1926. The pairing of these two drawings, sold together, was presumably the artist's. As usual with Shepard's drawings, the published versions are smaller than originally drawn and fine detail in the original tends to be lost. The buttons on Piglet's top, Christopher Robin's jumper, and the tree-root in the heffalump trap have a clarity of line which was lost or blurred when published. Original drawings (91 x 62 mm and 50 x 54 mm) on artist's board (160 x 112 mm and 107 x 84 mm), ink, first drawing signed with initials ("EHS") lower right, with remnants of artist's signature and address on reverse, mounted, framed, and glazed with conservation acrylic glazing (framed size 320 x 245 mm). Strong and unfaded ink drawings. Some browning below mount, not affecting image.
