Price: US$14.95 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Remainder mark bottom edge, else Very Good+ in Very Good+ dustjacket. Not price clipped, with $5.95 on flap. The story takes place in San Francisco, California in the early 1970s. The title character is a papier mache bird that shares the front room of a San Francisco apartment with a collection of bowling trophies that some time earlier were stolen from the home of the Logan brothers. The human tenants of this apartment are John and Pat, who have just returned from seeing a Greta Garbo movie in a local movie theater. Their neighbors are Bob and Constance, a married couple going through some rough times in their relationship. Because of their failing relationship, Bob becomes depressed. Meanwhile the Logan brothers are looking for their bowling trophies stolen three years earlier. The brothers have turned their happy life of bowling into a life of vengeance. Brautigan tried to have all the main characters in the story have an intersection that is comically sad. Richard Brautigan got the name Willard in the novel from his friend Stanley Fullerton's paper-mache bird named Willard and, in fact, a bird is on the front cover of the novel.

Richard Brautigan was first and foremost a poet. Arising out of the "beat generation" in and around San Francisco, Brautigan was in the right place at the right time to release his deceptively simple poetry. His observations and his clever wordplay made books like The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster.Selected Poems 1957-1968 mandatory reading by the counter culture. Richard Brautigan (1935 –1984) was an American novelist, poet, and short story writer. A prolific writer, he wrote throughout his life and published ten novels, two collections of short stories, and four books of poetry. Brautigan's work has been published both in the United States and internationally. He is perhaps best known for his novels 'Trout Fishing in America (1967) , In Watermelon Sugar (1968) , and The Abortion: An Historical Romance 1966 (1971). Brautigan began his career as a poet, with his first collection being published in 1957. He made his debut as a novelist with 'A Confederate General from Big Sur' (1964) , about a seemingly delusional man who believes himself to be the descendant of a Confederate general from of all places - Big Sur, California. Brautigan would go on to publish numerous prose and poetry collections until 1982. Most of his readers have started with 'Trout Fishing in America: A Novel', but it was his oddball books that apperaled to me the most, like 'Dreaming of Babylon: A Private Eye Novel 1942 or 'Sombrero Fallout: A Japanese Novel' was something of a companion piece to 'Babylon'. In both books, it is not about the story, it is about the journey and the style with and in which one makes it. In fact, on page two, the "story" is yanked from Brautigan's typewriter and thrown into the trash. Even Brautigan is not interested in the sombrero that falls out of the sky. The heart of this book is a poet's attempt to put into words something that is wordless; a loss. Specifically, that book, the loss of a beautiful Japanese woman who sleeps across town, while the author tries to explain why she left and how he feels about it. It's quirky, off-center, pure genius. 'Willard' one of these quirky, off-beat ones. In it, Brautigan displays some postmodern sensibilities in which he plays with non-linear narrative and literary devices that were fairly new at the time - mid 1970s - and make for a enjoyable reading experience. At once heartbreaking and humorous, and always humane, 'Willard' seemed something of a turning point in Brautigan’s work. Brautigan is comparable in his approach - but never achieved the fame and success - of Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Both were by turns absurdist, humanist, misanthropic, and satiric, although Vonnegut did flesh out characters differently and tended toward larger themes whereas Brautigan's gaze is focused more on individual people and their humanity. Willard is an insightful look into a world - written in way that seems light - if not lighthearted. 'Willard' may linger with you longer than you might at first suspect. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 167 pages

There is some extremely light bumping to the spine end of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is mostly clean and bright. There is some very beginning rubbing to the top end of the front flap. "In San Francisco, Brautigan sought to establish himself as a writer. He was known for handing out his poetry on the streets and performing at poetry clubs. In early 1956, Brautigan typed a three-page manuscript and sent it to The Macmillan Company for publication. The manuscript consisted of two pages with 14 poems and a page with the dedication "for Linda". Of the poems, only "stars" and "hey" were titled. In a letter dated May 10, 1956, Macmillan rejected the manuscript, stating, ". There is no place where it will fit in". In 2005, the X-Ray Book Company published the manuscript as a chapbook titled Desire in a Bowl of Potatoes. " (from Wikipedia)

Brautigan, Richard (signed); Jim Harrison (inscribed to). Willard and His Bowling Trophies: A Perverse Mystery (association copy). Simon & Schuster, NY, 1975.

Price: US$6250.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A significant association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the title page: "This copy is for Jim Harrison, with love from Richard Brautigan. August 30, 1975, Pine Creek, Montana." With Brautigan's trademark fish sketch. Jim Harrison, of Legends of the Falls fame, and Brautigan were friends and neighbors as part of the "Montana Gang" that also included Tom McGuane, William Hjortsberg, Russell Chatham, and Jimmy Buffett. Both Brautigan and Harrison deservedly have cult followings. This oddball novel takes place in San Francisco in the early Seventies, and its main character is a papier mache bird, Willard, who cohabitates with a collection of bowling trophies and a few humans. A very near fine copy with a touch of dust soiling to upper text block face in a very good of better jacket with minor rubbing and some browning to inner edges.A centerpiece book for any counterculture or American West collection.
