Description: Flexible blue cloth boards with gilt "modern man torchbearer" logo on front (re-designed by Rockwell Kent in 1929 btw) and titling to spine. Small book is tight, square, relatively sharp-cornered and free of major flaws or markings. Top edge dyed blue. Fantastic b/w illustrations by Rockwell Kent. Designed by the Walpole Printing Office, Printed by the Parkway Printing Company, Bound for the Modern Library by H. Wolff, with a new Preface by the Author. Endpapers also with amazing Kent illustration of ocean surrounding Alaska, Resurrection Bay, Kenai. Decorated endpapers on Modern Library books are uncommon at best.

There is almost no fading elsewhere and the illustrations are in great shape. The DJ is G/VG. There are minor tears and creases and a piece of tape across the top inside of the jacket. The spine of the DJ is slightly faded, but still not a bad copy for an over ninety-year-old jacket, Shallow chipping to spine ends of jacket, LAVENDER TOPSTAIN , Lavishly Illustrated incredible deep, rich black plates of the Alaskan wilderness; as witnessed in the 1920s .The inside of the DJ lists the complete 190 books in the series #182 on the DJ spine, which has very minor edgewear.with second preface Red topstain still evident with a restoration the original publishers refused to print and a 2p. special "Second") introduction for Modern Library Kent has written a new Preface for this edition and there is a frontispiece together with 46 woodcut illustrations in the text. One of the most elegantly designed of all books from the Modern Library.
