Description: Clean and sound, with an excellent interior and sound boards. The spine is lightly faded. This is the second printing, two months after the first issue. There is an owner's name stamped at the front, and he has also written his name in a fine hand and dated it "1898". On page 265 the words "The angel whispered, don't go" appear, for whatever that is worth. The pages of the text are pleasingly toned to a creamy beige. The illustrations are marvellous. Description: somewhat worn 1898 edition. olive cloth with gilt titles and black decorations to front cover and spine. top edge gilt. there is a modicum of age toning/soiling to the covers and page edges all around and the spine is somewhat faded. previous owner's name on front flyleaf. previous seller's catalog listing has been affixed to front endsheet. this states: 'The almost unfindable first printing in which the angel does NOT warn the stallion on P. 265* / * When the author found that the scene had been censored by the publisher on the grounds that angels do not talk to horses he was furious and insisted on having the passage immediately reset as written.' The binding is basically clean, straight and tight. there are a few spots where the signature gaps are visible, though they remain well bound.
