Sendak, Maurice [signed]. Where the Wild Things Are [signed]. Harper & Roe, 1988.

Price: US$375.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Oblong hardcover with DJ. The familiar illustrations on the boards, with gray cloth spine. The book and binding are in excellent condition. The DJ has gold Caldecott Medal sticker on the front. DJ is complete but has a bit of dustiness to it, inoffensive to any reader but perhaps not ideal for the collector-of-the-pristine. The DJ here is printed on non-glossy paper, just as the original 1963 edition was. On the spine of the DJ, there are a a couple spots where the removal of a sticker has lifted the coloring or words on the paper. Signed by Sendak beneath the book title on the half-title page. No inscription or date; just the signature. This is the 25th anniversary edition, identified as such on the title page and DJ flap. Bar code and ISBN on the rear DJ flap. 1988. The book itself is flawless; the DJ good-only. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it’s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.

Maurice Sendak. Maurice Sendak Signed "New York Is Book Country" Poster. Harper & Row, 1988.

Price: US$4500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A poster illustrated by children's book author Maurice Sendak (1928-2012), pen signed by the artist as "Maurice Sendak" at lower right. Printed courtesy of Horowitz / Rae Book Manufacturers, Inc. on fine quality art paper and distributed by Harper and Row, Publishers, Inc. on a single day of issue, September 18, 1988, to benefit Children's Services at the New York Public Library. Near fine. 18.5" x 23.75." The poster commemorated two cultural milestones: the 10th anniversary of the "New York is Book Country" book festival and street fair, held annually along Manhattan's celebrated row of antiquarian and used book stores since it was first inaugurated in 1978; and the 25th anniversary of Sendak's hugely popular children's book, "Where the Wild Things Are." The poster depicts one of Sendak's famous creations, a horned and bearded Wild Thing with a Chrysler building cap, consulting books by William Blake, Primo Levi, and the Brothers Grimm while gnawing on festival bunting. The monster towers above signs, storefronts, and awnings belonging to a few of Manhattan's oldest and most prestigious book stores. At its peak, Manhattan's 6-block "Booksellers' Row" oriented along Fourth Avenue included over 36 used and specialty bookstores such as Argosy, Schultes, and Biblio & Tannen. By the 1960s, many of these businesses were forced to relocate because of increasing rents. Sendak's creative vision, where all of the bookstores are again concentrated along Fourth Avenue, and where books cost 25 cents, is a nostalgic tribute to a bygone era. Maurice Sendak was an award-winning children's book illustrator and author. Always interested in design, Sendak began his career by illustrating comic books and designing toy company shop windows. "Where The Wild Things Are" was followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside Over There" (1981). Sendak also created, wrote, and produced animated children's television programs. This poster may be shipped in a tube.

Sendak, Maurice. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. Harper & Row, New York, 1988.

Price: US$11000.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Beautiful association copy of the limited 25th Anniversary edition, presented by Sendak to his dear friend James Marshall, with the special card containing an original signed pen-and-ink drawing of Max parading as a Wild Thing and an additional inscription to Marshall. Sendak sent this copy as a birthday gift to Marshall, best known for his George and Martha series, one year before Marshall's untimely death from AIDS-related complications at the age of 50. In 1997, Sendak wrote passionately about Marshall's place in picture book history for the NEW YORK TIMES, including their own deep connection: "If I remember with terrible pain my lost friend and colleague, it is only because James raised the art of friendship to an exhilarating height. I think myself the luckiest of men to have shared his sweet warmth and confidence. There is a small army of people who, I'm certain, feel the same way. He made me laugh until I cried. No one else could ever do that. He was a wicked angel and will be missed forever." When Sendak died, he bequeathed his own collection of Marshall's works to the University of Connecticut, which already housed Marshall's papers. This 25th Anniversary edition contains color reproductions executed to Sendak's exacting specifications, with lush results. The limited edition is scarce, and rarely retains the card with the dated (Oct. 88) Wild Thing drawing. Given the 1988 drawing and Sendak's 1991 inscription, it's likely this was one of his retained author copies. But most of all, it is the association of this copy - speaking to the mutual respect of giants in the field, and testifying to the depth of loss experienced by the gay community during the AIDS crisis - that makes it such a powerful object. 9'' x 10'' (book). Publisher's full blue leather stamped in gold. All edges gilt. In original lined cloth box with large color plate on front board. One of only 220 copies. Illustrated by Sendak in color throughout. 48 pages. Envelope laid in with 6.5'' x 5.5'' card inscribed by Sendak: "For Jim - a special picture for his birthday - Love - Maurice - Oct. 10, '91" under a pen-and-ink drawing of Max dressed as a Wild Thing, additionally signed "Maurice Sendak / Oct. 88."
