Description: A long-forgotten children's story from the late 19th century is brought to new life by illustrator Maurice Sendak, who also writes a nice introduction about the author & how he came across this enchanting tale. It is also an Ex-Lib copy, but with only 1 crossed-out stamp to top outside page edges, & first page (ffep) is neatly torn out (probably where card pocket was). This is a 1st American edition, probable 1st printing published by Harper & Row in 1963. The copy is without the dust jacket. ***************************************************** "Maurice Sendak's Caldecott Medal-winning picture book has become one of the most highly acclaimed and best-loved children's books of all time. A must for every child's bookshelf. *** This iconic story has inspired a movie, an opera, and the imagination of generations. When Max dresses in his wolf suit and causes havoc in the house, his mother sends him to bed. From there, Max sets sail to an island inhabited by the Wild Things, who name him king and share a wild rumpus with him. But then from far away across the world, Max smells good things to eat. *** Mary Pols of Time magazine wrote that what makes Sendak's book so compelling is its grounding effect: Max has a tantrum and in a flight of fancy visits his wild side, but he is pulled back by a belief in parental love to a supper 'still hot. Generations have shared this beautiful picture book, and children of all ages will want to return to it again and again." ******* The above text was taken from HarperCollins publishers (via Google Books).

Sendak, Maurice. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. Harper & Row, [New York], 1963.

Price: US$12000.00 + shipping

Description: Lovely first edition of the subversive Caldecott-award winner, in the rare original first-issue dust jacket. After illustrating nearly 50 other books, WILD THINGS was Sendak's first full-color picture book with his own text and illustrations. He took full advantage of that control to push the boundaries of the children's picture book genre. The story of a boy who gets in a fight with his mother and lets out his pent up feelings in a fantastical Wild Rumpus, WILD THINGS focused on the complex inner experience of little Max, acknowledging the reality that children deal with anger, frustration, and fear just as adults do. For this reason, the book was initially not well received: before the rise of New Realism in children's literature, many critics felt children's books ought to model ideal behavior rather than accurately reflect children's emotional experiences. The book made a splash from the very beginning, as Sendak expected it would: many critics advised against buying the book, and some libraries banned it. Readers largely didn't know how to react to its unconventional approach - until it won the Caldecott. WILD THINGS is now one of the best-selling children's books of all time, paving the way for commercial picture books that explore our darker sides and encourage us to make friends with monsters. 9'' x 10''. Original quarter grey cloth, color pictorial paper boards. In original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket without Caldecott medal, and with 3-paragraph blurb on front flap (blurbs are issue point, not price; ref. Hanrahan). Color pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Sendak in color throughout. [40] pages. Jacket with some soiling and toning, a few short closed tears minutely reinforced on verso. Book with a bit of bumping to extremities, else clean and bright. Near fine in very good plus jacket.

SENDAK, Maurice.. Where the Wild Things Are.. New York: Harper & Row, 1963, 1963.

Price: US$12511.84 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, first issue. Criticized at the time of publication for its dark elements, Where the Wild Things Are was soon acclaimed as a triumph of children's storytelling and book design; it has remained a classic of 20th-century children's literature, and was adapted into a film in 2009. There were multiple issues of the first edition, but this copy is the earliest, distinguished by the Library of Congress number 63-21253 to the title page, the codes 40-80 and 1163 to the front flap, and the absence on the rear flap of the mention of the Caldecott Award bestowed upon the book on publication - the winning of such a prestigious prize compelled the publishers to recall the entire edition and change the text on the dust jacket to include the achievement. Hanrahan A58; Grolier Children's 100, 97. Oblong quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards, front cover lettered in black. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom blue morocco-backed folding box by the Chelsea Bindery. Colour illustrations throughout by Maurice Sendak. Notably fresh, boards very slightly toned with rear corners slightly rubbed; spine of jacket slightly soiled, short closed tear to rear panel, some slight toning; a near-fine copy in a very good jacket.

An excellent copy of what is perhaps the best-loved and most distinguished illustrated children's book of the 20th century, one that the American Institute of Graphic Arts called "the perfect book." Inscribed by Sendak to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and translator Richard Howard (1929-2022) and his then partner, author and playwright Sanford Friedman (1928-2010). Howard and Sendak both spent time on Fire Island during the 1960s, where Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are, and the men were part of a tightly-knit circle of queer authors and artists in New York during that period. By the mid-1970s, Howard and Sendak had drifted apart, though this copy is evidence of a once closer friendship. While erroneously dated (the book was published in November, 1963 – this copy was actually inscribed on January 9, 1964, not 1963), it still remains among the earliest recorded inscriptions in copies of Where the Wild Things Are. The earliest we have traced were all inscribed (likely as holiday gifts) in December, 1963, to illustrator Hilary Knight, Sendak's friend and psychoanalyst Bert Slaff, and to Louise Halsey. SENDAK, Maurice. [Page proofs]: Where the Wild Things Are. Harper & Row, New York, 1963.

Price: US$25000.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Measuring 56" x 42". Some light wear at edges and a few light scattered creases, near fine. A production page proof for Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, *Where the Wild Things Are*. The proof is printed on both sides and retains its original bright and vibrant colors. It comes from the personal archives of a distinguished children's book author and editor who worked closely with both Sendak and the book's editor, Ursula Nordstrom. While there is no jacket present to verify the issue points, as typical for a first edition of the book, the title page is conspicuously missing its Library of Congress identification number suggesting it was printed prior to securing one as required for publication. Further, we have only been able to locate one other known copy of page proof for *Where the Wild Things Are* in the Maurice Sendak Collection at the Rosenbach Museum, and it too lacks the LOC number on the title page. An amazing artifact from what is one of the most popular and influential children's book of the 20th Century.
