Description: First Edition. Hardcover. A first printing of the first published work of the "Mother of Modern Witchcraft" Doreen Valiente and "one of the first three books to be published on the subject" of Wicca according to historian Ronald Hutton. In Where Witchcraft Lives, Valiente presents her original research into the history and folklore of witchcraft in her home county of Sussex. Heavy wear to price-clipped dust jacket, with 1" X 3" open tear to bottom edge of front panel, 1/4" loss to head of spine, small tears to edges and corners, rubbing to edges, dust soiling, and scattered rubbing. Price: US$449.14 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Cream boards with black lettering on the spine. The rear panel of the boards has a slightly different colouring from the front and spine - more grey with slightly streaky patches on the surface in the centre. Not sure how this has come about but most probably something odd in the production process. The spine is also slightly darkened. There are about a dozen small brown spots on the page fore edges with a thin pale brown stain running across the page edges in the centre of these. Two small spots on the bottom edges and a little smudging on the top edges. The pages are clean and bright with little signs of use. No jacket. First printing. From the collection of Peter Haining although there is nothing on the book to indicate this other than a cutting of Valiente's obituary on which he has noted the date.

The binding is clean and tight with only the most miniscule signs of bumping to the upper corner tip of the front board. The rear jacket displays some mild soiling and a couple of small tears (sealed). An ink stamp from the U.S. distributer Wehman Bros. ("Wehman Bros. Publishers 159 Main Street Hackensack, N.J") is present in the lower margin of the title page. Interior pages are generally clean. Pages 92-93 contain a small, light manufacturing smudge. Doreen Valiente (1922-1999), often called "the mother of modern witchcraft" was a founding figure in the contemporary Wicca movement. During the 1950’s, while she served as high priestess in Gerald Gardner’s Brickett Wood coven, Valiente re-worked much of Gardner’s "Book of Shadows" liturgy into forms still used by many in the Craft today. Later Valiente led a successful fight in Britain against proposed anti-witchcraft legislation. Valiente’s first book, "Where Witches Live," contains her own primary research into the folklore, witch traditions and witch trials of county Sussex. Valiente also included modern witchcraft practices. According to Ronald Hutton: "the greatest value of her first book to a historian lies in its portrayal of witch ceremonies in the very early 1960’s" [Ronald Hutton, The triumph of the moon. Oxford, 1999, p. 310].
