Referenced from the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL), no. 21211: "Introductory sketch pp. iii-v" original to this edition. Quoted from the Introductory Sketch: "This story is an attempt to trace the demoralization in a woman's soul of certain well-known influences in our existing social life. In no other way could certain phases of our society be made to appear so distinctly as when reflected in the once pure mirror of a woman's soul. The character of Margaret is the portrait of no one woman. But it was suggested by the career of two women (among others less marked) who had begun life with the highest ideals, which had been gradually eaten away and destroyed by 'prosperous' marriages and association with unscrupulous methods of acquiring money. The deterioration was gradual. The women were in all outward conduct unchanged, the conventionalities of life were maintained, the graces were not lost, the observances of the duties of charities and of religion were even emphasized, but worldliness had eaten the heart out of them, and they were 'dead souls.' The tragedy of the withered life was a thousand-fold enhanced by the external show of prosperous respectability."

As mentioned, the paper is split between the front pastedown and endpaper, but the binding itself is holding well, and is not really shaken or splitting within the book. Light offsetting to the endpapers, but no significant foxing. No dustwrapper. ***194mm x 130mm. 329 pages. ***'"The Sleeper Awakes" is a dystopian science fiction novel by English writer H. G. Wells, about a man who sleeps for two hundred and three years, waking up in a completely transformed London in which he has become the richest man in the world. The main character awakes to see his dreams realised, and the future revealed to him in all its horrors and malformities. The text published as "The Sleeper Awakes" in 1910 is a revised version of the original published novel "When the Sleeper Wakes", which was published as a serial, then as a book, in 1899. "When the Sleeper Wakes" was originally published as a serial in The Graphic (London) and Harper's Weekly (New York), with illustrations by Henri Lanos. Both editions appeared in the first 18 issues of 1899. When the book was about to be reprinted again, Wells used the opportunity "to make a number of excisions and alterations", and changed its title to "The Sleeper Awakes"'. (Wiki) ***A good reading copy of the true first edition, with interesting Edwardian period illustrations. Quite a scarce work now in first edition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: [i]-[iv]+189; [blank]+[2 ad] pages with frontispiece, 11 plates inserted and text illustrations. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine, black decorative symbols on front cover, deckle edges and head end pages stained orange-red. (BAL 4085) First edition. Stephen Crane was an American novelist, short story writer, poet and journalist. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. The eighth surviving child of Methodist Protestant parents, Crane began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16. Having little interest in university studies, he left school in 1891 and began work as a reporter and writer. Crane's first novel was the 1893 Bowery tale Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which critics generally consider the first work of American literary Naturalism. He won international acclaim for his 1895 Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without any battle experience. In 1896, Crane endured a highly publicized scandal after acting as witness for a suspected prostitute. Late that year he accepted an offer to cover the Spanish-American War as a war correspondent. As he waited in Jacksonville, Florida for passage to Cuba, he met Cora Taylor, the madam of a brothel, with whom he would have a lasting relationship. While en route to Cuba, Crane's ship sank off the coast of Florida, leaving him adrift for several days in a dinghy. His ordeal was later described in The Open Boat. During the final years of his life, he covered conflicts in Greece and lived in England with Cora, where he befriended writers such as Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells. Plagued by financial difficulties and ill health, Crane died of tuberculosis in a Black Forest sanatorium at the age of 28. At the time of his death, Crane had become an important figure in American literature. He was nearly forgotten, however, until two decades later when critics revived interest in his life and work. Stylistically, Crane's writing is characterized by vivid intensity, distinctive dialects, and irony. Common themes involve fear, spiritual crises and social isolation. Although recognized primarily for The Red Badge of Courage, which has become an American classic, Crane is also known for short stories such as The Open Boat, The Blue Hotel, The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, and The Monster. His writing made a deep impression on 20th century writers, most prominent among them Ernest Hemingway, and is thought to have inspired the Modernists and the Imagists. Condition: Extremities lightly rubbed else a very good copy.

Wells, H.G.. When the Sleeper Wakes. Harper & Brothers, London and New York, 1899.

Price: US$7200.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardcover. First Edition. An excellent Author's Presentation Copy, inscribed "C.F.A. Voysey from H.G. Wells." Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific writer in many genres but is best remembered for his science fiction novels, of which this is one. This dystopian work was first published in 1899, but Wells revised it in 1910 and published it as When the Sleeper Awakes. He was dissatisfied with this first version, saying it was written when he was under time pressures. The recipient is Charles Voysey, an important English architect and designer who was influenced by the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. In 1900 he was the architect for Spade House, which Wells built in 1900 and lived in for the succeeding decade. Laid in is a Raphael Tuck and Sons "real photograph" postcard of Wells that is contemporary with the book and signed in ink below the image. Such an early photograph of Wells is uncommon and signed ones are rare. It is very likely that Wells gave this one to Voysey. Bound in original red cloth with gilt title and author to spine and front cover. Spine is faded, bumping to corners. Hinges tender, endpapers smudged, light spotting to half title page not affecting the inscription. An accession number is written in ink on the free front endpaper and there is a blind stamp "W.H. Smith and Son London" below it. Bookplate of John Richard Sofio to front pastedown. Housed in handsome beige cloth box with leather title and author label to spine. Very good condition. 329 pages. LIT/011416.
