Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan. WHEN THE WHIPPOORWILLS. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1940.

Price: US$400.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The copyright page has an "A" and the Scribner colophon. It is a book of short stories by the author of THE YEARLING and the stories have earlier copyrights. The stories are set in rural mid-state Florida in Depression and Prohibition time. Fact and fancy are the irresistible blend that characterizes these delightful tales of Florida's backwoods. and the Florida Crackers - the zany but lovable folks who populated the remote hamlet that was Marjorie Rawlings' home. With a gift for humor and a venerable ear for dialect comes the author's personal accounts of the people, scenery and wildlife of Cross Creek. ~Very good, first edition, first printing, in green cloth boards with black title and gilt decorative accents, in good condition. There is a sizaeable chip missing from the top[ spine edge and some wrinkling along the rear top edge, as well as a lesser amount of chipping to spine bottom. Front and rear jacket covers present well in mylar and the chipping described is not unusual for a book of this age that was printed long before there were mylar protective book covers. There is some light speckling to the topstain but the textblock is very clean and the quality of the paper used to print this book is unusally high for 1940; beter, in fact, than many printed today.Very scarce first printing title. {Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} L106
