Milne, A. A. Decorations by Ernest Shepard. Now We Are Six.. Methuen & Co. Ltd, London, 1927.

Price: US$700.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of the third book in Milne’s beloved Pooh series. Octavo, original publisher's cloth with gilt decorations to the spine and front panel, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, illustrated with decorations by Ernest Shepard. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Gift inscription to the front free endpaper. “Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame” (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children’s magazine. “On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children’s verses, one each day… ‘There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]… and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.’ He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch” (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in “a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal” (DNB).

MILNE, A. A.. Now We Are Six. With decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1927, 1927.

Price: US$1122.86 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, deluxe issue, of the third of the Winnie-the-Pooh books. Now We Are Six was printed in an edition of 50,000 copies, of which 5,000 were bound in leather by the Ship Binding Company: 1,500 in blue, 1,500 in green, and 2,000 in red as here. Following the success of When We Were Very Young, Milne began planning a second book of poetry for children. In a January 1926 letter to his brother Ken he included it as number one in a list of "things which ought to be done": "A book of verses (about 15 done to date) to appear in 1927 or 1928" (Thwaite p. 293). By the time that Winnie-the-Pooh was published in late 1926, half of the poems for this third book were already complete. Alongside Milne's charming verse, this collection is also notable for including many illustrations of Pooh, Piglet, and the other nursery toys, even when unmentioned in the poems. John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, University of Virginia Press, vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-139, item IIIA; Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life, 1990, p. 293. Octavo. Original limp red calf, spine lettered and illustrated in gilt, pictorial designs to covers in gilt, gilt fillet to front cover, illustrated pink endpapers, edges gilt. Illustrated throughout by E. Description: Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth with an illustration of Christopher Robin to the front board in gilt, gilt border to front board, illustration of Pooh and Piglet to the rear board in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial pale pink endpapers with illustrations of Christopher Robin and Pooh in blue; pale green dust jacket lettered and decorated with illustrations in blue. Near fine book with a touch of toning to spine, light spotting to rear pastedown, and bit of rubbing to spine ends; very good unclipped dust jacket with some toning to spine, a small chip to foot of spine that partially affects "Methuen", light marks and two small closed tears to front panel, and a large tear to rear panel that has been repaired with tape on jacket verso. Overall, a bright copy with a very clean interior. Now We are Six is a collection of thirty-five children's poems and verses that comprises the third of four volumes in The Pooh Books, Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends of the Hundred Acre Wood. Like the rest of the books in the series, Milne wrote Now We are Six for Anne Darlington, the daughter of family friends whom both families hoped would marry Milne's son Christopher Robin; while the first Pooh book When We Were Very Young was dedicated to Christopher Robin, Now We Are Six is dedicated to Darlington. As Milne alludes in his introduction, "We have been writing this book for three years. We began it when we were very young and now we are six." Although only a few of the poems feature him, Winnie the Pooh frequently appears in Shepard's decorations. As Milne explains, Pooh "thought it was a different book; and he hopes you won't mind, but he walked through it one day, looking for his friend Piglet, and sat down on some of the pages by mistake."

Price: US$2245.71 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, of the third of the Winnie-the-Pooh books. As noted by the dust jacket blurb, "Winnie-the-Pooh, perhaps an inch more round the waist, makes an occasional appearance". Following the success of When We Were Very Young, Milne began planning a second book of poetry for children. In a January 1926 letter to his brother Ken, he included it as number one in a list of "things which ought to be done": "A book of verses (about 15 done to date) to appear in 1927 or 1928" (Thwaite). By the time that Winnie-the-Pooh was published in late 1926 half the poems for this third book were already complete. Published on 13 October 1927, it took only two months for Now We Are Six to eclipse the sales records of the previous two books. Full of Milne's charming verse, this collection is also notable for including many illustrations of Pooh, Piglet, and the other nursery toys, even when uncalled for by the poems. John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, University of Virginia Press, vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-139, item IIIA; Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life, 1990, p. 293. Octavo. Now We Are Six is a collection of thirty-five children's poems and verses that comprises the third of four volumes in The Pooh Books, Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends of the Hundred Acre Wood. Like the other books in the series, Milne wrote Now We Are Six for Anne Darlington, the daughter of family friends whom both families hoped would marry Milne's son Christopher Robin; while the first Pooh book When We Were Very Young was dedicated to Christopher Robin, Now We Are Six is dedicated to Darlington.
