Grey, Zane (Pearl Zane Grey). The Roaring U. P. Trail. Hodder and Stoughton Ltd, London, 1939.

Price: US$44.83 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First published in 1918, this is a thirty eighth impression of 1939, the year Zane Grey died. Some edge wear, chipping and short closed tears to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed, some slight overall time staining, some spotting to page fore edges. Price on spine of classic Hodder yellow jacket (2/-), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 384pp. Ignoring public scorn in their determination to build the Union Pacific Railroad across the Wyoming mountains, young civil engineer Warren Neale and his partner Larry Red King are further challenged when Neale's girlfriend is abducted. The story begins in the early sixties, a trail led from the broad Missouri, swirling yellow and turgid between its green borders, for miles and miles out upon the grassy Nebraska plains, turning westward over the undulating prairie, with its long, winding lines of cottonwoods, to a slow, vast heave of rising ground, Wyoming, where the herds of buffalo grazed and the wolf was lord and the campfire of the trapper sent up its curling blue smoke from beside some lonely stream. Many western films have been made from American dentist and chronicler of the American West Zane Grey's (1872-1939) novels, his best known book was 'Riders of the Purple Sage'. Quite a scarce book, even in this later impression.
