FROST, Robert. WEST-RUNNING BROOK. Henry Holt and Company (1928), New York, 1928.

Price: US$312.50 + shipping

Description: Crane A10: Presumed Second State with "First Edition" printed on the copyright page. Illustrated by J. J. Lankes. Contains the title poem, "Spring Pools," and "Acquainted With the Night," among others. Laid in is an undated but contemporary letter on Holt letterhead from Leonard Blizard, a designer/typesetter with the publisher, to Dr. [Robert] Leslie, founder of The Composing Room, a leading typesetting firm of the time, and a mentor to many of the top designers of the period. The letter presents this copy of the book to Dr. Leslie with Blizard stating, "It is a 'First Printing' & we hope you will enjoy it." Crane based her bibliographic point of the "First Edition" statement on information provided by the earlier bibliographers Clymer and Green who state that "it seems more likely that copies without 'First Edition' were printed first and the oversight remedied only after the greater part of the edition had been distributed." Does this letter refute that? Alas, the possibility that the letter was laid into a different copy exists, and the language of the letter itself is not strong enough to confirm the dissent and provide a conclusive answer, but it certainly raises the question. A short tear and slight chipping to the upper front corner of the front endpaper. The dustwrapper has a short closed tear at the top rear edge of the spine with a small chip on the spine about an inch or so down. Near Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper

Description: Signed by Frost on title page. Corners are worn as is the top and bottom of spine. Cover shows some rubs. Pages 26 and 27 have browning from newspaper article left between leaves. This book can be identified as a first printing by the error "roams" for "romps" on the last line of page 44, corrected in subsequent printings. This book of Frost poetry is from the personal collection of Jean Lee Latham and is doubled signed by her in addition to the Frost signature. Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 - January 29, 1963) was an American poet. He is highly regarded for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech. His work frequently employed settings from rural life in New England in the early twentieth century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes. One of the most popular and critically respected American poets of the twentieth century, Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime, receiving four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He became one of America's rare "public literary figures, almost an artistic institution."He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works. On July 22, 1961, Frost was named poet laureate of Vermont. Jean Lee Latham (April 19, 1902 - June 13, 1995) was a personal friend of Frost and they both had homes in the Miami, Florida Area. She was an American writer who specialized in biographies for children or young adults. She was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia, attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and received an A.B. in 1925. Extremely rare with both Frost's and Latham's signatures. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 64 pages; Signed by Collection of Signatures

Frost, Robert. West-Running Brook. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1928.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Illustrated by J. J. Lankes. First edition, first printing, first state, without an edition statement to the copyright page. Signed and inscribed by Frost: "Robert Frost/ Wesleyan/ 1929". Original publisher's paper-covered boards over green cloth; dust jacket lettered in green, ruled in red. About fine with slight rubbing to the spine ends; unclipped dust jacket with some wear and small chips at the corners and spine, spine lightly toned, else near fine. Crane A10. West-Running Brook is a collection of 39 poems, including "Spring Pools," "A Peck of Gold," "Once the Pacific," "Acquainted With the Night," "Canis Major," "A Passing Glimpse," "The Peaceful Shepherd," "The Flower," and "On Looking Up By Chance at the Constellations," among others. The poems are thematically divided into six sections: "I: Spring Pools," "II: Fiat Nox," "III: West-Running Brook," "IV: Sand Dunes," "V: Over Back," and "VI: My Native Simile." Throughout the text, Frost uses nature as allegory for human interactions and political themes. For example, the titular "West-Running Brook" involves a husband and wife conversing about a brook that runs west instead of east, which Frost uses as a symbol for the importance of contrast to achieve harmony in personal relationships. The text is illustrated with woodcuts by Lankes, and their rough beauty is perfectly paired with Frost's verse.

Both based much of their work on rural subjects, employed understatement and symbol and explored the question of human significance in the over-all scheme of nature" (Vanderbilt University).
