A soft back edition containing 3 other stories: Baa Baa Black Sheep, His Majesty the King and The Drums of the Fore and Aft. Undated and makes no mention of a later date. Title page lists both Wheeler and Sampson Low as publisher. The front cover lists only Sampson Low. Original illustrated light grey card wrappers. Chipping to the edges with slight loss in places. Small hole in the spine of the cover. Front wrapper has been professionally reattached to the book. Light foxing within the book and overall a clean copy. Page of advertisements at the front of the book.

A. H. Wheeler & Co's Indian Railway Library Series No. 6, is a 96 page booklet containing the stories of Wee Willie Winkie, BAA, BAA Black Sheep, His Majesty the King, and The Drums of the Fore and Aft. Printed with "H" unpunctuated in A.H Wheeler on the front cover. Same collation as the 3rd printing of the 1st Indian Railway Allahabad edition. Title page printed with the word "child" omitted. This is 1 of 10,000 printed copies issued. (3000 were the 3rd Indian Railway Allahabad edition, and 7,000 had the covers re-engraved and were published as the 1st English edition); Front cover without "Mufid I Am Press, Lahore," and with re-engraved front-cover of a small boy confronting bemused onlookers. Reverse cover shows a detailed engraving of two Englishmen, one of them blowing a fife. CONDITION: Very good condition; a few small chips, closed tears, and light wear to wrappers; 0.5 inch closed tear of front edge; small chip of bottom front corner, and very small chip of top front and bottom back corners; small 2 inch tear of front seam, covers otherwise securely attached to paper spine; text complete and intact, overall in excellent condition, unmarked, no stains or rips and unfoxed, with a wrinkled crease of p.71-72 (as pictured). Some minor edge chips and small piece missing from bottom of spine, otherwise nice.

Description: Large octavo. (2 pgs. of ads) 104pp. (+ vii pages of ads at the rear). Full contemporary red morocco binding, with a gilt-stamped motif and tooling on the the front cover and spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers and gilt dentelles, with an ex-libris (the same design as on the front cover) measuring 1x1" on vellum, at the interior front cover. This is the true first edition of this collection of children's stories by Kipling, published in India. This is no.6 of the "Indian Railway Library" series, published by A.H. Wheeler & Co, with a cover price of "One Rupee." The original grey-green illustrated wrappers (both front and back) credited to the "Moto School of Art, Lahore" have been bound into this beautiful hardcover signed binding by Brentano's. The front wrapper features three men and a boy, while the back wrapper shows two flute-playing soldiers. The front and back of the book feature ads for and reviews of other works by Kipling. Binding with some minor rubbing to extremities, and minor smudging to the covers. A faint horizontal scratch to the front cover. Interior with a small closed tear to the bottom of the gutter at the interior front cover. Light spotting along the edge of the book block, the front free endpapers, and the bound in front wrapper. Binding and interior in very good+ condition overall. No.6 of the "Indian Railway Library" series, by AH Wheeler & Co. These where originally sold at railway stations in India, in softcover editions.

Description: True first Indian edition. 8vo, [vii], 104pp, vii. Original green-grey paper wrappers. The wrappers are detached (but present), the backstrip is lightly chipped, there is a tear to the first page of advertisements, and there are small chips to the leading edge of pp 19-24. Nonetheless the contents are in good to very good condition, and this is a good copy overall of a fragile book. The book is now housed in a red cloth and morocco case, with a red cloth chemise (wear to the top edge of the case). The true first edition, first issue, with "Mufid I am Press, Lahore" on the front wrapper (Martindell, pp27/28).
