Price: US$46.85 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First appearing 8 years after his landmark 'The Grapes of Wrath' (1939, Pulitzer Prize winner), this highly anticipated novel is set in a rural area of California and depicts the characters and driver who often ride a private bus between two small towns. Three strangers - a traveling salesman, a stripper, and an alcoholic wife - meet on a fateful bus ride. Made into a 1957 Twentieth Century Fox film of the same name directed by Victor Vicas, starring Dan Dailey, Jayne Mansfield, and Joan Collins. John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. (1902?1968) was an American author and the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature winner. Many of his works are considered classics of Western literature. Although this novel was not considered his most popular, it may well have been the most commercially successful. Steinbeck dedicated this novel to "Gwyn", presumably a reference to his (soon to be) second wife Gwyndolyn Conger. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Hardback cover has rust cloth boards, gold lettering on front & spine, with no DJ. Deckled page-edge across from spine. Minor shelf wear. Book carefully read and stored with square corners. Copyright 1947. Printed in U.S.A. Printed in 1947, according to the title page, hence early printing assured. Has the first issue points of "Published by the Viking Press in February 1947," with no other printings mentioned, 1st printing thus implied, and "Printed in U.S.A. by H. Wolfe, New York." No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR.
