Beckett, Samuel. Watt. Olympia, Paris, 1953.

Price: US$975.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The scarce limited first edition (1100 copies, this one numbered 399) which precedes the first trade printing by 5 years. Considered by many to be Beckett's funniest work it is still a largely misunderstood masterpiece, though destined, I feel sure, to rank one day with 'Finnegans Wake' as one of the great literary achievements of the 20th century. This is a clean bright copy in the publisher's magenta wraps as issued. One longer and one shorter diagonal crease to corners of rear cover; miniscule chips to head and the inevitable creasing to the spine. Bookplate to front free endpaper but no other inscriptions and no foxing; very uncommon in this condition.

Beckett, Samuel. L'Innommable. Les Éditions de Minuit, Paris, 1953.

Price: US$2750.00 + shipping

Description: Original wrappers, covers spotted, text paper browned as always, unopened. The third novel of Beckett's trilogy. Inscribed "for Austryn Wainhouse / cordially / Sam Beckett / Paris July 1953". A good association. Wainhouse had worked for Olympia Press and was one of the editors of Merlin, publishers of Beckett's "Watt". He was best-known as a translator (of Sade, Bataille, de Beauvoir, etc) and won a National Book Award for translation in 1971. First edition, ordinary paper copy, one of 3000 printed.
