Description: London: Macmillan and Co., 1885. A collection of poetry and sermons. In a full blue calf binding with gilt edged boards and gilt decoration to the spine. Attractively bound with some rubbing to the head and tail of spine and patches of rubbing to the extremities. Firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Charles Kingsley is probably best known for his classic The Water-Babies which illustrates his concern for social reform. The tale retained its popularity well into the twentieth century. He wrote several poems and hymns, including 'The Saint's Tragedy', 'Andromeda' and 'A Thought From the Rhine' all of which are present to this volume. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition slightly rubbed but still bright and attractive. Joints good condition worn. Corners good condition worn and bumped. Spine cracked.

Black endpapers and alll edges gilt. iIlustrated with 100 wood engravings -full page, in text and large chapter headings. One of the great Victorian illustrated editions. There is a neat inscription on the half title page (dated 1885) but an attractive, tightly bound edition and becoming diffiicult to find in any reasonable state. Payment by credit card through ABE. In greenish-blue cloth-covered boards with extensive gilt decoration, lettering and featuring the now famous vignette of the child and dragonfly. All edges gilt. Dark brown endpapers. Boards a worn at edges, rubbed and rounded on corners, fraying around spine and joints. Front hinge cracked, and an A has been penciled on the front free endpaper, some spotting on next leaf and faint, occasional spotting throughout. First published in book form in 1863, this is the first edition of The Water-Babies to feature Sambourne's illustrations.
