Winston S. Churchill Compiled by Charles Eade. THE END OF THE BEGINNING: War Speeches by the Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill. Cassell & Company Ltd., London, 1946.

Price: US$19.24 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Winston Churchill, in addition to his careers of soldier and politician, was a prolific writer under the pen name 'Winston S. Churchill'. After being commissioned into the 4th Queen's Own Hussars in 1895, Churchill gained permission to observe the Cuban War of Independence, and sent war reports to The Daily Graphic. He continued his war journalism in British India, at the Siege of Malakand, then in the Sudan during the Mahdist War and in southern Africa during the Second Boer War. Churchill's fictional output included one novel and a short story, but his main output comprised non-fiction. After he was elected as an MP, over 130 of his speeches or parliamentary answers were also published in pamphlets or booklets; many were subsequently published in collected editions. Churchill received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 "for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values" Contains speeches given at the turning point of the war, following victories at Alamein and Stalingrad and the North Africa landings. This is just one of six volumes of Churchill’s illustrated collected speeches compiled by Charles Eade that I am selling on this site. Uniformly bound in blue cloth with gilt titling to the spine, a dustwrapper is not present. Originally published in 1943 this third edition was published in 1946. Ref GGG 6

Description: 96 pages. Illustrations. Some foxing to text and inside endpapers. Some wear to board corners and spine edges. Winston Churchill made five speeches of major importance in Secret Sessions of the House of Commons during World War II: "The Fall of France" (June 20, 1940); "Parliament in the Air Raids" (September 17, 1940); "The Battle of the Atlantic" (June 25, 1941); "The Fall of Singapore" (April 23, 1942; and "Admiral Darlan and the North Africa Landings" (December 10, 1942). Secret Session Speeches is the seventh and final volume of Churchill's war speeches. This slim volume contains five speeches Churchill made to the House of Commons sitting in Secret Session. It is anomalous among the other war speeches volumes in many respects. First, publication of the U.S. edition preceded the British, making the U.S. the true first edition. Second, both the U.S. and British first editions mark a significant visual departure from the preceding war speeches first editions. Third, unlike the contents of the other war speeches volumes, the words within this volume were not made or meant for public consumption. In fact, there was no public record of the speeches at all. As explained by the volume's compiler, Charles Eade, in his Introduction, "these speeches were not recorded even for official and historical purposes. Fortunately, the speeches were of such character that Mr. Churchill before delivering four of them prepared full texts of what he proposed to say." Only the first speech, that of 20 June 1940 after the fall of France, lacked a full text dictated by Churchill. When Churchill rose that evening in the House of Commons he held nine pages of typewritten notes and headings, bearing written additions and alterations made by him during the course of the preceding discussion. For this first of Churchill's speeches, the volume reproduces a photocopy of his original notes and emendations. The remaining speeches are printed in full. Once the ban on revealing what had taken place in the Secret Sessions was lifted, Churchill was able to ask Charles Eade to prepare them for publication. Eade, of the Sunday Dispatch, continued to compile Churchill's war speech volumes. The book adds explanatory and comment preceding each speech. The British first edition adds eight leaves of plates at page 48 bearing sixteen full page wartime photographs and captions.

Winston S. Churchill. Victory. Cassell and Company Ltd., London, 1946.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Description: This is the British first edition, only printing, first state of the sixth volume of Churchill's war speeches. Both aptly and ironically titled Victory, this volume contains speeches, broadcasts, messages, statements, a letter, and the text of the Crimea Declaration made, sent, and issued between 18 January and 16 August 1945. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. His final speech in this volume - a review of the war delivered on 16 August 1945 to the House of Commons - was delivered as Leader of the Opposition rather than as Prime Minister. In this speech Churchill trenchantly observed ".The bomb brought peace, but men alone can keep that peace, and henceforward they will keep it under penalties which threaten the survival, not only of civilization but of humanity itself "Condition approaches near fine in a good dust jacket. First state of the first edition, only printing is confirmed by mispagination at p.177. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with only trivial shelf wear to extremities. The contents are bright and clean. Modest spotting is confined to the page edges. The sole previous ownership mark is contemporary – a brief inked gift inscription on the front free endpaper recto dated "8 November 1946." The dust jacket is substantially complete, with only fractional chipping at the spine ends and retaining the original lower front flap price. The jacket is bright, with only minimal fading to the purple hue at the lower spine. Nonetheless, the jacket is compromised, with wear to extremities, light overall soiling, and a 6.5 inch (16.5 cm) diagonal tear to the upper front face, along with wrinkling along the top edge. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, clear, archival cover.Few books are as emblematic of Churchill’s literary and leadership gifts as his war speeches volumes. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of note - Member of Parliament for more than half a century, soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner, painter. But Churchill's preeminence as a historical figure owes most to his indispensable leadership during the Second World War, when his soaring and defiant oratory sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." When Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, it was partly " for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes. The British first editions are visually striking, but were printed on cheap "War Economy Standard" paper, bound in coarse cloth, and wrapped in bright, fragile dust jackets. They proved highly susceptible to spotting, soiling, and fading, so the passage of time has been hard on most surviving first editions.Reference: Cohen A223.1.a, Woods/ICS A112(ab), Langworth p.234
