Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was a novelist, playwright, and short story writer. He was a renowned author in his time and even today. Lewis became the first American writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Following Lewis's essay on book collecting are bound-in samples of books to be published by the Limited Editions Club. The samples are as follows: The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle in Which Is Included Memoirs of a Lady of Quality with an Introduction by G. K. Chesterton and Illustrations by John Austen, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Walden; or, Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau, Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gipsy, the Priest by George Burrow, Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, Walter Savage Landor: Imaginary Conversations Selected and Introduced by R. Boothroyd, The King James Version of the Holy Bible, Gargantua & Pantagruel: The Five Books by Francois Rabelais, A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy by Laurence Sterne, The Man Without a Country by Edward Everett Hale, and The Way of All Flesh by Samuel Butler. The Limited Editions Club (LEC) was founded in 1929 by George Macy (1900-1956). The club specialized in publishing illustrated fine-press reprints of literature. Most of the limited editions published by the club were signed by the illustrator, and in some cases, by the book designer or even the author. As of 2012, the LEC said there would be no further publications by the club.
