BECKETT, Samuel.. Waiting for Godot. Tragicomedy in 2 Acts.. New York: Grove Press, 1954, 1954.

Price: US$3250.42 + shipping

Description: First edition in English, first impression, of Beckett's most famous work, originally published in France as En attendant Godot in 1952, with the full text translated into English by Beckett himself for this edition. The play premiered in French on 5 January 1953 at the Théâtre de Babylone, Paris; "the extraordinary success of this first production in French was responsible for Beckett's rise to worldwide fame, as the play rapidly became an object of intense international interest and controversy" (ODNB). Productions followed in English on 3 August 1955 at the Arts Theatre, London, and in America on 7 May 1956 at the John Golden Theatre, Broadway. The play was not published in the UK until 1956, and then in a new expurgated translation, again by Beckett. Godot is generally agreed to be a masterpiece of existentialist and avant-garde theatre: the apparently simple plot "disguises some profound themes: life's brevity and its pain; the human need for something to confer meaning on a mysterious existence; in its absence, a compensatory need for friendship to protect and sustain, yet fail to satisfy; a Cartesian concern with the uneasy interplay of mind and body; and, above all, a radical uncertainty which characterizes every aspect of the two friends' lives" (ibid.). Federman and Fletcher 373. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver and gilt, covers lettered in blind, red endpapers. With dust jacket. With 4 plates from photographs. Contents lightly toned, else a fine copy in very good jacket, a little toned with minor rubbing and chipping at extremities, price intact and without repair.

Samuel Beckett. Waiting For Godot. Grove Press, 1954.

Price: US$4100.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First American Edition; A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket. SIGNED by the author on a card affixed to the front free paper. An outstanding copy of this first edition printed in English; originally published in French, the play debuted on stage in Paris in 1953; translated by the author into English and published by the Grove Press in 1954. Subtitled "A tragicomedy in two acts", this play has been voted "the most significant English language play of the 20th Century". Signed copies of this book are very rare, the first US even more so; as of this writing, this is the only US edition that includes the author's signature currently on the market. This copy is in near fine condition with a square, tight binding, bright silver and gold spine lettering, and clean pages throughout; the book does show some light soiling to the exterior text block, mild residue to the front pastedown from a removed bookplate, and a discreet PO inscription to the 2nd free paper, else fine. Housed in an original, intact, very good dust jacket that is clean and bright but does show light tanning to the spine and folds, some moderate rubbing and chipping to the spine ends, edges, and corners, a couple of short tears to the front flap fold (one small circular tear at the mid-spine area and one at the spine foot), and one dark stain to the back panel (please see pics for flaws). Overall, a presentable and highly collectible copy, greatly enhanced by the author's elusive signature. Not price clipped ($4.75 intact), not remaindered, and not ex-library; in a fresh Mylar cover and will ship in a sturdy box.

BECKETT, Samuel.. Waiting for Godot.. Grove Press, New York., 1954.

Price: US$12676.64 + shipping

Description: First edition in English, paperback issue in the Evergreen series, simultaneous with the hardback. Octavo. ff 60, [6]. Pictorial wrappers.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed by him on the title-page: ''for Laz and Margaret from Sam affectionately - Paris May 1956''. The recipients are Beckett's friends the poet and economist Lazarus Aaronson and his wife. It seems that the print run for the hardbound copies was so restricted that none was sent to Beckett himself, which meant that even people close to him were presented with these paperbacks. This is a very early inscription, as those usually encountered date from the Seventies and Eighties. Some marginal (tea?) staining to four pages. Covers rubbed and tanned at the spine and edges. Good. A copy of some significance.
