Charles Kingsley. HYPATIA or New Foes with an Old Face. MAcmillan, London, 1890.

Price: US$11.53 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Good, hardback, maroon cloth covers with gilt titles on faded spine, covers are lightly marked with some fading, contents are clean and unmarked, 12mo 165pp. Weight 300g. Originally published in 1863 and reprinted many times, this is 3rd edition, and first sixpenny edition. Biography of Miriam, the first woman scientist/alchemist on record and with some very recognisable devices/techniques credited to her. 5th century history and not all pleasant reading with plenty of hatred, mistrust and stupidity in the centre of learning of the time - Alexandria. A student of Socrates. Mainly nowadays mentioned in books on invention/innovation as inventor of the Bain-marie (which she used to separate molten metals) and a form of hydrometry, etc. But this book is a serious attempt at full biography of this outstanding woman caught in the crossfires of the young church and old world. Excellent material for biographical reference, but the chapter titles are not automatically self-evident, one would read the whole book (30 chapters) to find reference to specifics. A remarkable work.

Description: A handsomely bound set of four of Charles Kingsley's novels in eight volumes. Bound by J&E Bumpus in half calf bindings. A beautifully bound set of four of Charles Kingsley's novels, 'Hypatia, Or New Foes with an Old Face', 'Hereward The Wake', 'Alton Locke', and 'Westward Ho!'. This edition of Volume I of 'Hereward The Wake "Last of the English"' was published in 1893, and this edition of Volume II was published in 1881. This is an historical novel, about the Anglo-Saxon figure Hereward, who led resistance against the Normans. This edition of 'Alton Locke, Tailor and Poet' was published in 1893. It is the story of a young tailor-boy who has instincts and aspirations beyond the normal expectations of his working-class background, and was written in sympathy with the Chartist movement. This edition of 'Westward Ho! Or The Voyages And Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh' was published in 1902. It contains a frontispiece portrait of Charles Kingsley. It is a novel is based on the adventures of Amyas Preston, an Elizabethan corsair, who set sail with Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh to the New World. Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) was a scholar, historian, novelist and priest of the Church of England. A Christian socialist, much of his work was concerned with social reform: Alton Locke was written in sympathy with the Chartist movement, and in Yeast Kingsley condemned Roman Catholicism for the poverty he believed it condoned. In truth, a strong anti-Catholic sentiment - common at the time - runs through many of the author's works. Bound in half calf with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart with minor shelf wear and rubbing, especially to the corners. Some marks to the boards, and fading to the corners. Externally, joints to 'Hereford The Wake' Vol II and 'Westward Ho!' Vol I are slightly strained, but remain firm. Hinges on all volumes are starting, but firm. Internally, previous owner's inscription on front free-endpaper and binder stamp on verso of front free-endpaper on all volumes. Internally, all volumes firmly bound. Pages very clean throughout in all volumes with the odd spot on first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed
