Price: US$2250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Literature. Limited to 1050 sets, not numbered, this main set published from 1913 to 1919, twenty-five volumes. (There were 6 additional volumes published in later years in limited quantities.) Large quarto volumes, cream cloth spines with paper labels over light blue paper covered boards. These books were published with spare spine labels tipped into the rear endpapers, but the previous owner used these labels to make custom folding cases for each volume EXCEPT volume XVI, which still has the spare label in the book. Volume one is SIGNED by Kipling on the half title page. The books are uniformly foxed on the outside of the paper covers with similar tanning of the cloth spines. The endpapers are foxed, but that does not extend into the books. All top edges are gilt with a little spotting, all corners and spine ends are sharp and clean, due to being cased. Most of the silk place ribbons are deteriorated on the ends. The green cloth cases are rubbed, and the spine labels are browned and spotted with a few small chips. There are several small splits at the folding edges of several of the cases. One case (volume XII) has a tear and dent in the fabric which has been repaired. Please contact us for more photographs. Volumes are 7" x 10", set is 45" shelf length. This price includes insured shipping to US addresses. Contact us for shipping costs to international orders.

The Years Between. The Muse Among the Motors. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. The Bombay edition was initially published in 20 volumes and limited to 1000 copies. Kipling continued to write and it eventually grew to 31 volumes, but the last 11 volumes were limited to 500 copies only. This collection is complete in twenty five volumes, which was limited to 1050. With watermarks to the endpapers. In original publishers' half cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Eighteen of these volumes feature their original dustwrapper. Externally, all volumes are generally sound, with only some light rubbing and scattered marks. Slight foxing to the spine labels without dustwrappers. Both hinges to volume fourteen are strained, with the rear being a little more tender. Dustwrappers are a little chipped with some slight loss to the head and tail of the spines. Dustwrappers are also quite foxed, which is heavier to the spine of volume twenty-four and twenty-five. Very minor damp staining to the spine of volume three and four. Closed tear to the head of volume fifteen's spine, as well as the tail of volume sixteen's. Volume twenty-four and twenty-five's dustwrappers have some evidence of past worming, which is heavier to volume twenty-five. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound and bright, though with some slight straining to volume twenty-three. Some foxing to the endpapers and textblock edge. Many leaves are uncut. Replacements for the original spine labels bound into the rear of each volume. Very Good
