Description: The 35th book in the original Oz canon, this was the first to be both written & illustrated by John Neill, who illustrated all of the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum. In publisher's light green cloth over boards with colorful front pastedown, this is a FIRST EDITION, but slightly later printing (blank endpapers) from Reilly & Lee c. 1940s, in 318 pages with marvelous black-and-white illustrations throughout, decorative endpapers. Condition is downgraded to only Fair-Good due to external wear: cloth is heavily frayed at both ends of spine & worn at corners to underlying boards. Random soiling, large stain on rear board.Front pastedown is bright, with minimal edgewear. Both hinges cracked; text block secure, but wobbly. Description: The first edition of 'The Wonder City of Oz' by John R Neill. This is a continuation of the previous Land of Oz books by L Frank Baum. 'The Wonder City of Oz' is the thirty fourth in the series of the Oz books by L Frank Baum and his successors. This is the first edition of Neill's work, evident by its 16 gatherings and pictorial endpapers. Subsequent editions had plain endpapers and 32 gatherings. The first edition had bindings in blue cloth, green, beige and orange. (Greene, Handd, Martin p.86) Written by and illustrated by John R Neill, who previously illustrated more than forty books from the Land of Oz series. 'The Wonder City of Oz' is the first of many Oz books by Neill. In original blue cloth binding with pictorial image pasted to the front board. Externally, smart with some rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Minor bumping to the head and tail of spine also. Hinges are slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's signature to the 'This book belongs to' page, John Webster. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Very Good

Denslow, the illustrator of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ, John R. Neill took on the job of illustrating the second Oz book, THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ (1904). He continued illustrating the series beyond Baum's death, providing the legitimacy of continuity for Ruth Plumly Thompson, Baum's successor.
