Description: 12mo. Two volumes in one, the first being Gleig's account of Sale's battles with Afghan forces, the siege of Jellalabad, and the breakout of British forces in 1841-42. Gleig was the principal chaplain to Sale's forces and provides a stirring account. The second book is Barrow's famous biography of Sir Francis Drake. Bound in half leather with wide gilt decorated spine hubs and contrasting spine labels, marbled boards and endpapers. Leather lightly rubbed, otherwise quite nice. A tight copy.

First edition of this study of early 19th- century Arctic explorations. "Contains a detailed account of the principal British expeditions into the North American Arctic (also to Svalbard), from that of Ross in 1818 to those of Back and Simpson, 1836-39; their scientific achievements, and contribution towards a discovery of a Northwest Passage.
