Description: Oblong quarto. Blue stitched wraps with a printed label to cover, enclosed within a folding portfolio. Condition: Very good, with just a faint hint of wear to cover edges. The folding portfolio is in fair/poor condition, with quite heavy wear to the edges and spine, the edge of which is split with some peeling of paper away from the spine, general sunning to edges and a small watersplash mark to the lower corner of front cover (see image). However, it has served its purpose, protecting the contents well. The second in a series of limited editions published by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and under the direction of Monroe Wheeler, this book was designed, illustrated and printed by Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) at The Gehenna Press, Northampton, Massachusetts (the Gehenna Press was founded by Baskin). The edition was limited to 975 numbered copies, all signed by Baskin, this is number 327. (There were also 25 lettered review copies). The poems by Hart Crane were reprinted by permission of the Liveright Publishing Corporation from "Collected Poems of Hart Crane". The illustrations were printed from six original boxwood engravings and one cherry woodcut on Amalfi Italian hand-made paper and on Moriki and Mending Tissue, both hand-made in Japan.
