Condition: Very Good

Description: First printing of the first edition with 'First Published in 1915' on the printer's page. First state of the title page with the comma present after Essex Street and with no final full stop after 'W.C'., and with a 4pp publisher's advert, dated Autumn 1915 and a 31pp publishers catalogue, dated 8/5/15 bound in at the rear. Also with 'Methven' on the spine - later issues have 'Methuen'. The only state earlier than this has a Spring 1915 publisher's advert. This first UK edition also has a two-page Author's Note at the beginning of the book. Published in September 1915, 8,000 copies were printed (Wise 25 - Thomas J. Wise - A Bibliography of the Writings of Joseph Conrad (1895-1921) ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and floral decorations to the spine. The gilt is still quite bright. The boards are quite clean, with just some marks commensurate with age and handling over the years - mainly on the front board. The head and tail of the spine are slightly rubbed and creased, and slightly frayed at the top edge, but with no tears to the fragile cloth. There is no splitting at the spine, and no reading lean to the binding. No bumping - just slight creasing to the corners. The spine is darkened but without any reading creases. The top edge of the page block is slightly darkened. No foxing to the page block edges, and only minimal foxing internally, mainly affecting the prelims and last couple of pages. Internally the book is very good, with no inscriptions. The top edge of the page block is slightly darkened. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions or offsetting to the pastedowns. No serious creases or tears except for some light creasing to a few of the top corners (pp.184-214). Spine tight. No dustwrapper. ***415 pages plus the 4-page publisher's advert of 'Methuen's Popular Novels' and the 31pp catalogue of 'A Selection of Books Published by Methuen' at the back of the book, correctly dated Autumn 1915 and 8/5/15 respectively. 196mm x 132mm. ***'"Victory" (also published as "Victory: An Island Tale") is a psychological novel by Joseph Conrad first published in 1915, through which Conrad achieved "popular success." The novel's "most striking formal characteristic is its shifting narrative and temporal perspective", with the first section from the viewpoint of a sailor, the second from an omniscient perspective of Axel Heyst, the third from an interior perspective from Heyst, and the final section has an omniscient narrator. It has been adapted into film a number of times.' (Wiki) ***First printing of the true first edition of Joseph Conrad's "Victory - An Island Tale" - in the original publisher's red cloth-covered gilt-decorated boards, in very good condition for a book now over a hundred years old. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Conrad, Joseph. VICTORY. An Island Tale. , 1915.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Description: Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company 1915. Original navy blue cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition (published on March 26th, six months before the London edition) of Conrad's sad tale of Axel Heyst and the evil (for which read "Germanic") Schomberg. Due to the six-month delay of Methuen's edition, with the Great War raging, Conrad added to that edition a preface that discusses the "Teutonic psychology" of Schomberg. This American edition is noteworthy for its front endpaper map of the world, showing where Conrad's previous tales had all taken place. This is a clean, near-fine copy (slight rubbing at the extremities, some cracking of the endpapers). Supino A19.1.0; Cagle A19a. Provenance: there is a penciled signature dated "March 1915", the month of publication. Also, this was the copy of Walter E. Smith (who wrote the 1979 bibliography of Conrad) -- with a tender 1969 inscription TO him; laid in is a slip of his penciled bibliographic notes, which became the "Internal Flaws" on pp 63-64 of his bibliography.

A fine copy with a little foxing to the page edges in a very good dustwrapper which has a small chip to the head of the spine and a couple of closed tears to the cover with associated creasing. Conrad's psychological novel is both a thrilling tale of adventure and an exploration of the power of love. A most uncommon survival in the original WW1 dustwrapper.

Description: First British edition, first impression, in an exceptional example of the scarce dust jacket, one of the earliest graphically designed jackets issued by a British publisher, featuring a specially commissioned illustration not based on the cloth cover design nor an illustration in the book. Victory was published as part of Methuen's "Popular Novels" series, which marked a sea change in the history of British publishing and of the dust jacket. Earlier jackets typically consisted of lettering and an illustrated design based on the blocking of the binding. Only two years earlier, the jacket for Methuen's 1913 edition of John Oxenham's Bees in Amber bore the jingle: "This outer wrap is only meant / To keep my coat from detriment. / Please take it off, and let me show / The better one I wear below." Their "Popular Novels" series also included D. H. Lawrence's The Rainbow and P. G. Wodehouse's Something New. This copy is in the first state, with the comma after "Essex Street" on the title page. The novel was first published in the US earlier the same year. Cagle A19b(1); Keating 113; Wise 25. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom red quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. Tiny bumps to cloth at extremities; dust jacket slightly rubbed, extremities lightly worn with short split to front flap fold, overall remarkably bright, flaps without price as issued: a fine copy in near-fine dust jacket.
