Description: Uncommon in the trade, not currently available otherwise. Virtually pristine exemplar of Angel of Paradise, published by Verve, Paris, Volume 33-34, devoted wholly to Marc Chagall, printed by the master, Fernand Mourlot, Paris and Geneva, from Mourlot Freres, Paris, for Verve. This is an original color lithograph, unnumbered but one of 6,500 copies. In 1956, the art critic and publisher E. Teriade brought out a special issue of the legendary art magazine Revue Verve, which was exclusively devoted to one of Marc Chagalls major themes--The Bible--that comprised 18 full-page lithographs in full color, and another 12 in black and white. Beautifully executed on the full sheet as published, measuring 13 1/2" x 10" in height and width, respectively. This original lithograph is one of four angel motifs that Marc Chagall drew for his famous first "Verve Bible". With its shining yellow, tender mauve, and deep violet, this is one of Chagall?s most subtle lithographs, the male angel is drawn in golden yellow and seems to amuse himself "paradisiacally" between two violet-colored female figures. The shining angel in the middle is surrounded by a violet color circle and the inquiring women?s gazes from the left and right. The double lines that Chagall drew are also quite peculiar, suggesting by contrast a sense of dynamism and movement. The Russian Jew Marc Chagall?s dreamlike compositions featured Eastern European folklore, flying figures, elements of Jewish tradition, biblical themes, peasant life, and animals are frequent motifs. Chagall practiced in painting, printmaking, books, ceramics, and stained glass, embracing and developing Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism, Surrealism and Modernism. He lived in and between Russia, France, and the United States and exhibited there widely. His stained-glass windows for Hadassah University Medical Center?s Abbell Synagogue in Jerusalem and elsewhere are magnificent.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
