Collated, complete. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally sound. Rubbing to the joint and to the extremities, as well as to the head and tail of the spine, resulting in a small amount of loss to the leather. Crack to the head and tail of the front joint. Front hine is failing, and front board is a risk of becoming detached. Rear hinge is strained but firm. From endpaper has been ripped, and detached but present. Corner of the rear endpaper had been clipped. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with the odd spot throughout. Half title page has a small tidemark to towards the binding. First published in monthly installments from 1848 to 1850 (and published in book form in two volumes in 1849 tand 1850) 'The History of Pendennis' follows the titular protagonist through his youthful career; from his first love affair, to his experiences at "Oxbridge University" his employment as a London journalist, and so forth. This work, much like Thackeray's earlier 'Vanity Fair' provides a rich portrait of England in the early nineteenth century, and similarly offers a satiric picture of the aristocratic society of the period. Collated, complete with numerous in-text sketches, and twenty three plates 'on steel and wood' to each volume. Volume II features Thackeray's dedication to Dr. John Elliotson, who attended him when suffering a life-threatening illness 1849. In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper over boards, and marbled endpaper and textblock. Externally generally smart, with rubbing to extremities, boards and head and tail of spine. Slight fading to spine, as expected with this colour binding. Prior owner's ink inscription to verso of title page of each volume. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few pages. Odd handling mark to the occasional page. Small closed tear to fore edge of page 39/40, volume I, not affecting text. William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863), English novelist best known for writing satirical novels such as Vanity Fair. During the Victorian era he was second only to Dickens in popularity. The History of Henry Esmond tells the story of the eponymous hero, his participation in the unsuccessful campaign of the Old Pretender, and his eventual marriage to his cousin and foster-mother, Rachel, Lady Castlewood. They emigrate to Virginia and Thackeray's novel, The Virginians continues the story of the family but from the point of view of Henry's grandsons, George and Henry. The History of Pendennis concerns the romantic entanglements of Arthur Pendennis or Pen, his foster sister Laura and various other acquaintances. Pen is also the narrator of two later novels, The Newcomes and The Adventures of Philip. Please note that this collection of Thackeray's work contains the following: Henry Esmond (two volumes, complete), The Adventures of Philip (two volumes, complete), The Four Geroges (one volume, complete), The Humourists (one volume, complete), Pendennis (volumes one and three only), The Newcomes (volume four only), The Virginians (volumes three and four only).
