Description: This is sometimes incorrectly identified as the First American edition of Virginia Woolf's first novel. The confusion is easy to understand, for various reasons. The best source of information on identifying this (and a number of other classic modern classics is the three volume Author Price Guide by Allen & Patricia Ahearn (Quill & Brush, 2001). This is the 2nd U.S. edition of The Voyage Out and 5th (!) overal edition, due to the fact there are technically 3 previous British editions and the actual First American Edition, published in 1920 by George H. Doran. There is no publication date on this Harcourt, Brace & compnay edition. There is only, 1920 copyright by Doran. It was finally published in 1926, in a print run of 1000. 'Sky blue' cloth with 'mauve' paper spine label printed in black affixed toward spine head. The cloth has turned with age and sunning to three distinct colors. Rear board remains blue with grey splothes and darkened edges. The spine has browned with a suggestion of blue/green peeking through. The front cover appears mostly green (with little of the original blue remaining) though there is plenty of grey stains and a few dark splothes. Dust stains & darkening to textblock edges top & bottom. Likewise along deckled fore-edge. The cloth edges of spine top & bottom are slightly fray. There is a slight give to binding but it remains sound, with some pull at top. Previous owner's name, a date and location inked front pastedown. Internal text clean & without markings. (375 pages.)
