CARRUTHERS, Douglas.. UNKNOWN MONGOLIA: A RECORD OF TRAVEL AND EXPLORATION IN NORTH-WEST MONGOLIA AND DZUNGARIA. IN TWO VOLUMES.. Hutchinson,, London,, 1913.

Price: US$780.10 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp xviii, 319; 659, six maps (four folding), 128 plates (14 folding panoramas). Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered gilt on spines and on front covers. The regions of north-west Mongolia and Dzungaria and specifically the sources of the Yenisei River, to which Carruthers devoted two years of exhaustive exploration, had previously been some of the only places in the world, in the exploration of which, the British had had no part, it having been monoploised by the Russians. The aim of the Carrutherss expedition, which covered over 5000 miles, was to explore as thoroughly as possible the sources of the Yenisei, one of the largest rivers in Asia. His account is thus of enormous value, not least for its geographical importance but also for its descriptions of the last indigenous tribes of southern Siberia, who had been driven back in to the far recesses of the forests, First map protruding and very slightly creased at edges, otherwise very good indeed. Excellent condition.
