This work is not a continuous narrative of their travels but consists of articles by Burton, Drake, Mrs Burton and others. The plates include shells, plants, and Burton’s collection of anthropological materials from the Holy Land (skulls etc.). The text contains catalogues of these materials. Volume two has a frontispiece, eleven full page plates, twelve vignette illustrations and one folding map. Collated complete. An interesting account of the culture, land and history of Syria, written from the personal travel experience of Richard F. Burton and Charles F. Tyrwhitt-Drake. Richard Francis Burton was a classic British explorer, writer and orientalist scholar. He is best known for documenting his journey to Mecca, undertaken in disguise, at a time when non-Muslims were strictly forbidden. He was a captain in the East India Company, and a member of the Royal Geographical Society, through which he became the first European to have seen Lake Tanganyika in Africa. Charles F. Tyrwhitt-Drake was a naturalist, archeologist and linguist. He is best known for his work with the Palestine Exploration Fund, where he investigated the Hama inscriptions. Burton described Tyrwhitt-Drake as his, 'inseparable companion' during their travels. The half title pages are present. Each volume has a bookplate for, 'Richmond College Surrey', to the front paste-down. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Shelf wear to the edges. Price: US$3857.23 + shipping

Description: 8vo (154 x 220 mm). 2 vols. XVI, (4), 360 pp. 6, (2), 400 pp. With 2 frontispieces, 25 plates (11 of which folding), and 2 folding maps, as well as several illustrations in the text. 20th century red library cloth. First edition. Richard Burton, then consul at Damascus, explored the volcanic regions east of that city and the highlands of Syria. The work contains two items of great archaeological interest: the first was the assertion (much derided) that the Hamath stones were of Hittite origin, a matter not finally decided in Burton's favour until eventual decipherment in the 1920s. The second concerned a Moabite inscription recently discovered near the Dead Sea, which suggested that the true result of the conflict with Israel, as narrated in the Book of Kings, was a Moabite victory. The enthusiasm with which Burton challenged the biblical version of events may well have hastened his dismissal from Damascus. - Vol. 1 includes ten fold-out plates reproducing inscriptions found on the Hanath Stones; the remaining plates include reproductions of shells, plants, and Burton's collection of anthropological materials from the Holy Land. Complete copies were scarce in Penzer's day and now rare. - The Burtons rode to Palmyra, Baalbek and the Cedars of Lebanon with Drake and E. H. Palmer on their first encounter, before Drake and Burton set out on their archaeological expedition the following year. Burton did not see Palmer again until 1880 in the Midian but when Burton was recalled from Damascus (a "wicked and unforgivable" Government blunder, according to Penzer), it was Palmer who wrote in protest to the Civil Service Gazette. And when Palmer disappeared in the Sinai desert in 1882, it was Burton who set off in pursuit at the behest of the Foreign Office. Lovell writes that the "Palmer affair marks an end to Burton's physical adventures" and an upsurge in his literary output. - Maps and one plate with tears and old tape repairs verso. Removed from the Wolverhampton Public Library with their usual labels and blind-stamps throughout; slight bumping to corners and extremities. - Blackmer 247. Penzer 85-88. Casada 68. OCLC 2096419.

Description: 2 volumes. First edition. In a rare unrecorded state of the cloth binding. With the large folding map, 27 plates (11 folding), and 28 illustrations in the text. 8vo, mustard cloth with ruled and decorated in black and blind on spine and covers, spines lettered in black. [xx], 360; [viii], 400. A unusually nice and bright set, hinges tight and strong with much less than the usual wear to the original cloth bindings. Half title in Volume I cut. Penzer notes three states of the binding, but none match the binding on this copy, which has a ruled border and fancy border on the upper covers in black, on the lower covers in blind, and no lettering on the covers. A miscellany of information about unknown regions of Syria compiled during several months wanderings in the deserts. Burton and his wife were station at Damascus; Charles Tyrwhitt-Drake and Edward Henry Palmer, who were working under the auspices of the Palestinian Exploration Fund, did a bit of exploring on their own and happened to meet up with Burton in Damascus. Edward Rice, in his biography of Burton, strongly suspects that the meeting was not just happenstance, and that the pair, if not the three, were following some secret anti-Turkish mission. Palmer and Drake departed Damascus in 1870, though Drake remained in the middle east, travelling, exploring, and mapping. Shortly thereafter he returned to Bludán to collaborate with Burton on this book. Complete copies are scarce, and needless to say copies in original cloth are especially scarce as well.
