Falls describes it as "an almost perfect picture of the small events which made up the siege warfare of France and Flanders. Behind that one catches every now and then the shadow of the wings of the Furies" (p. 182). Falls, pp. 182-3, awarding his highest accolade of three stars for "a book of superlative merit". Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With dust jacket. Spine cocked and sunned at foot, a couple of spots of wear, foxing to edges and outer leaves, text largely unaffected; jacket slightly marked, spine browned, small chips and closed tears at ends and corners, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.

Description: First edition. xiv, 317 pp. Black cloth with gold lettering to spine, in paper dust jacket (not price clipped). Clean boards. The binding is very slightly slanted with light bumping to spine ends. Laid paper with deckle edges; internally fresh and clean. Light shelf wear to extremities of jacket, some discolouration to spine and to top edge of panels, a few marks to back board. 'Undertones of War' is a memoir of WWI, and the first prose publication of English poet, Edmund Blunden. Despite its prose format, it was described as 'the best war poem' by G. S. Fraser, and subsequently printed as poetry in the 'London Magazine'. 8vo.

An exceptionally clean, bright and lovely example of this superb work, considered along with Sassoon's Memoirs of An Infantry Officer among the finest works to come from World War I. Some early pages of this volume remain uncut. Some minor spotting along the top edge. The spine of the jacket is a shade darker than the front and rear panels. Near Fine / Near Fine.
