Greenaway, Kate. Under the Window First edition. George Routledge & Sons, London, 1879.

Price: US$38.16 + shipping

Description: First edition, 1879. Undated. (No ornamentation either side of 'Edmund Evans' on title page, printer's imprint to verso of title page and 'End of Contents' to foot of p14). Quarto. 64pp. Dark green cloth spine over decorated boards. All edges tinted yellow. Kate Greenaway's first book to combine her literary and artistic talents. Edmund Evans, the engraver and colour printer, was ridiculed for risking a first edition of 20,000 copies but his judgement proved to be very sound when the figure of 70,000 was reached on reprinting. Book in good condition. This is an ex reference library copy and has a printed bookplate of Newport Public Libraries to the front paste down. There is also a small sticker with a library number to rear free end paper and an occasional small blind stamp. Boards a little rubbed and lightly soiled. Some wear at corners and edges. Extremities of spine worn. Two small closed marginal tears. Occasional light soil mark. Bright and virtually free of spotting with just a very slight occurrence to prelims.

Greenaway, Kate. George Routledge And Sons Illustrated Catalogue Of Christmas Books. George Routledge And Sons [ 1879], London, 1879.

Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: 16mo, 32 pages, lacks rear wrapper, top wrapper chipped; offered "as is", with all faults, disbound. Rare ( WorldCat cites only 1 copy, and that in Seattle; not in the Newberry nor was it in the Meacham Sale in 1921). The top cover is a chromoxylograph from Kate Greenaway's first book, UNDER THE WINDOW ( which first appeared in bookstores in October,1879), printed by Edmund Evans, for the Routledges. The publishers were clearly impressed with Greenaway's work to put it on the cover ( the inside illustrations for the other listings are in black-and-white). The catalogue lists Routledge's ANNUALS for 1880, indicating that this catalogue must have appeared in 1879, the year of UNDER THE WINDOW, the first printing of which sold out immediately.
