Condition: Fair

Description: Early reprint published the same year as the first printing. "One hundred and tenth thousand." Binder's copy. 1852 Hard Cover. 322, 12 pp. Volume 2 of 2. Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly, is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the U.S. and is said to have helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War. Stowe, an active abolitionist, featured the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave around whom the stories of other characters revolve. The sentimental novel depicts the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as enslavement of fellow human beings.

Anon and B Disraeli. Uncle Tom in England Or a Proof that Black's White An Echo to the American 'Uncle Tom' and Venetia. Houlston and Stoneman 1852-3, London, 1852.

Price: US$299.40 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Two interesting novels bound as one. The first, Uncle Tom in England appears to be an english novel which draws a parallel to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The author is not attributed, although to the rear there is an essay by anti-slavery campaigner and president of the British and Foreign anti-slavery society, Thomas Clarkson. To the preface is written that the author has connected its plot to the work of Mrs Stowe and is therefore to be looked on as an Echo or sequel to 'Uncle Tom'. Several characters share their names with Stowe's. This is the third edition of Uncle Tom in England, printed the same year as the first American edition. Uncle tom in England is an extremely scarce and unusual text. The second novel to this text is Benjamin Disraeli's novel Venetia. Venetia was originally released in 1837 and was published so as to form an income for Disraeli in a time of need. It is a romance based on the characters of Shelley and Byron. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with heavy rubbing to spine and boards. Spine label and head and tail of spine are particularly rubbed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown 'John P Maitland Family Heriloom'. Another inscription to recto of front endpaper dated 1918. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Good

Condition: Good

Description: Illustrated sheet music, 4to (14" x 10.75"). 4 pp., cover engraving, 3.25" x 5.25". The publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852 resulted in a virtual explosion of books, broadsides, sheet music, posters and other ephemera. Boston publisher John P. Jewett (1814-1884) published this song for voice and piano in the same year that he published the first edition of the novel. The price was twenty-five cents. The song was performed in a dramatization of Uncle Tom's Cabin adapted by George L. Aiken from Stowe's novel. The illustration on the front-cover, produced by Boston wood-engravers Baker & Smith after artist Hammatt Billings, shows Little Eva reading the Bible to Uncle Tom while seated in an arbor, and was one of numerous illustrations designed by Billings for the first edition. According to Billings's biographer James O'Gorman, "Little Eva reading the Bible to Uncle Tom in the arbor" was "without doubt the most important image of the first edition." At the time the novel was published, there was no visual precedent for an adult black man sharing an intimate moment with a small white girl, alone and out in nature. Seen outside the context of the book, Tom and Eva in the arbor would likely have been an arresting sight. Of all Billings's scenes for the book, this one proved the most captivating and was reproduced both as Billings designed it and in numerous variations on broadsides, sheet music, and elsewhere. John P. Jewett published a number of anti-slavery works, including Pictures and Stories From Uncle Tom's Cabin (1853, an edition for children), Autographs for Freedom (1853), Richard Hildreth's Despotism in America : an inquiry into the nature, results, and legal basis of the slave-holding system in the United States (1854), A North-side View of Slavery : The Refugee (1856) and History of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue (1859). Hammatt Billings (1816-1874) was an artist, designer, architect, illustrator and painter. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum in 1859 and 1873, and achieved considerable recognition as an architect. External tape repair along the spine, center leaves detached but present, soiling and a dampstain to the rear wrapper not affecting the interior content, still very good. The illustration depicts Eva and Tom reading the Bible in the arbor, an image that captivated the public at the time, spawning many commercial print reproductions, as well as actors staging the scene for the production of photo cards. Jo-Ann Morgan of the Department of African American Studies at Western Illinois University writes, "Among those initial six engravings, Little Eva reading the Bible to Uncle Tom in the arbor was, according to Billings' biographer James F. O'Gorman, 'without doubt the most important image of the first edition.' Unlike the slave Madonna or praying supplicant, there was no visual precedent for a grown black man, in the prime of life, cozied up with a tiny white girl, alone, out in nature."

Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an American author and abolitionist, best known as the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Stowe's were ardent critics of slavery and supported the Underground Railroad, temporarily housing several fugitive slaves in their home. One fugitive from slavery, John Andrew Jackson, wrote of hiding with Stowe in her house in Brunswick, Maine as he fled to Canada in his narrative title The Experience of a Slave in South Carolina (London: Passmore & Albaster, 1862). Stowe claimed to have had a vision of a dying slave during a communion service at Brunswick's First Parish Church, which inspired her to write his story. On March 9, 1850, she wrote to Gamaliel Bailey, editor of the weekly anti-slavery journal The National Era, that she planned to write a story about the problem of slavery. In June, 1851, the first installment of Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in serial form in The National Era. She originally used the subtitle "The Man That Was a Thing," but it was soon changed to "Life Among the Lowly." Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published in book form on March 20, 1852. In less than a year, the book sold an unprecedented 300,000 copies. Uncle Tom's Cabin wasn't just the bestselling book of 1852; it became the bestselling novel of the 19th century, and was only outsold by the Bible, which had a 52 year head start. At one point, John P. Jewett Publishing Co. had three presses and hundreds of workers producing copies to keep up with the demand. After the start of the Civil War, Stowe traveled to Washington D.C., where she met President Abraham Lincoln on November 25, 1862. What Lincoln said to Stowe is a minor mystery - her son later reported that Lincoln greeted his mother by saying, "so you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war." The conflicting opinions which surrounded Uncle Tom's Cabin are said to have helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War. An absolute perfect addition to any home library. Presents well. STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly (One Hundred and Seventy-Third Thousand). John P. Jewett and Co, Boston, 1852.

Price: US$850.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Large octavo, 166pp., illustrated on the interior panels of the wrappers (the first depicting the "Wide-Awakes" of Hartford, CT; the rear showing a pool hall scene, with no caption--both of these probably inserted later). A good copy only of this fragile publication, bound in limp canvas cloth, with applied labels to front and rear wraps (this seems to be a slightly later attempt at structural reinforcement, rather than a variant binding from the publisher). Wrappers quite worn, with some shallow loss to extremities, the front inner hinge slightly exposed, but holding. Contents quite clean, with scattered occasional foxing and a few small stains. On the front wrapper is printed "An edition for the million!" and the notice "173,000 copies already published in America." Printed in two columns. This is an early reprint of Stowe's classic. There were so many different kinds of reprints that even BAL neglected to attempt to catalogue them. However, they do describe this one as among the very earliest reprints, listing it along with others bearing the "edition for the million" notice and similar publication numbers, under number 19524. Though rather hard to trace in commerce due to its glut of similarly-titled reprints, this example is clearly scarce in commerce. OCLC records just a half dozen separately listed holdings bearing the "edition for the million" statement, and none with this precise number of copies in print (173,000). AAS holds most of the variants.

Description: Firenze, Tipografia Mariani, 1852, Verosimilmente la prima edizione italiana. Esemplare molto buono (qualche escoriazione alle cerniere, all'interno lievi fioriture passim). «The social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since» P.M.M., 332. Stowe, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin; or Life Among the Lowly [first edition/first printing]. Boston. John P. Jewett & Company. Cleveland Ohio, Jewett, Proctor & Worthington, 1852.

Price: US$1250.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Hardcover. First edition, first printing, with 1852 on the title page and ALL the first edition/first printing points as described in the BAL. Our copy has been rebound in an attractive green cloth with patterned floral pattern in what we believe is a sympathetic style to the book and the era. It came to us in a ruined, original, binding (brown cloth) by way of a bookstore on a remote Maine island. We thought long and hard about how best to treat it, before deciding on this treatment. Text block has been resewn and rebacked. Two of the three original engravings were present; the third has been added from a later 1852 edition (the 95th thousand). In addition, pages 281, 282, 284, and 284 were missing and those have also been furnished from the sacrificial, later, copy. These new pages are trimmed slightly smaller than the other pages, so there is no question of trying to trick anyone. Binding tight. New endpapers and headbands. The book has been read and re-read, and there is slightly more than the normal foxing and signs of use to the pages. We have retained the original brown covers and can happily include those with the book. The BAL lists 7 publications points for the first printing of the first edition. This copy has all of them: 'Spilt' on page 42; 'Mericky' on page 42; 'as' still on page 46; parenthesis present on page 46; 'sorel' on page 50; comma after 'and' on page 266; damaged type on page 286. Uncle Tom is the most historically important novel of the 19th century. It was first published in an edition of 5,000 copies in March of 1852. The first printing (this one) sold out within 24 hours. More than 120,000 copies were printed and sold before the end of the year. Later editions nearly all state which printing it is, with an indication on the title page of which 'thousand' is it. This copy, in addition to all the correct first edition points, states no other editions and no mention of print run on the title page. This is volume 1 only, ending after chapter 18. Wikipedia advises that there were 6 plates inserted, but BAL (and this copy & all the evidence of other ABE listings) suggests that is just 3 of them. A landmark of American literature; a truly scarce title; and the first printing (in book form) of one of the best known and least read of our beloved and important titles. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it’s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.

According to BAL, volumes stamped in such a way are likely the second printing, not as is sometimes supposed, the third printing. "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life.' The social impact of [the novel] on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since." When Abraham Lincoln met its author at the White House in 1862, he is said to have exclaimed, "So this is the little lady who made this big war?" This first printing of five thousand copies was exhausted in a few days, and the book eventually sold more copies in the 19th century than another book except the Bible. Perhaps the most influential work of American literature and a cornerstone of 19th century literature. The initial printing sold out immediately upon publication and the book went through continual reissue for years after its introduction. Nicely illustrated editions bound and decorated as with this copy have become increasingly difficult to find. For Harriet Beecher Stowe, the battle against slavery was a God-ordained crusade to cleanse the United States of an evil affront to humanity. In the emotion charged atmosphere of mid-19th century America this novel exploded like an atomic bomb. For those opposed to slavery it was a testament to all that was wrong in an evil system. To the pro-slavery forces it was considered a slanderous attack on an established way of life. In either case, the impact of UNCLE TOM¿S CABIN on the society of the United States of America was probably greater than any book published before or since. PMM Stowe presented her story in the style of popular works of the era [melodramatically]--and with religious undertones, but the themes of the novel--the breaking up of families, violence, the naive idea of a return to Africa, and the question of slaves agency in this oppression--are historically significant. Stowe had not only witnessed incidents like the ones described in her novel, but had long been concerned about slavery, having read the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Louis Clark, as well as the abolitionist tracts of L.M. Child and Theodore Weld, and in 1850, when the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, she began writing Uncle Tom¿s Cabin. [The Fem GT Lit in Eng] The Fugitive Slave Act, in combination with her book, were arguably the catalysts for the Civil War, as even Lincoln implied upon meeting Stowe. All in all, a beautiful set of this classic of American literature. Photos available upon request.

"In the emotion-charged atmosphere of nineteenth-century America, UNCLE TOM'S CABIN EXPLODED LIKE A BOMBSHELL.THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF UNCLE TOM'S CABIN on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since." PMM ‘For Harriet Beecher Stowe, the battle against slavery was a God-ordained crusade to cleanse the United States of an evil affront to humanity. In the emotion charged atmosphere of mid-19th century America this novel exploded like an atomic bomb. For those opposed to slavery it was a testament to all that was wrong in an evil system. To the pro-slavery forces it was considered a slanderous attack on an established way of life. In either case, the impact of UNCLE TOM’S CABIN on the society of the United States of America was probably greater than any book published before or since’. PMM Stowe presented her story in the style of popular works of the era [melodramatically]--and with religious undertones, but the themes of the novel--the breaking up of families, violence, the naive idea of a return to Africa, and the question of slaves’ agency in this oppression--are historically significant. Stowe had not only witnessed incidents like the ones described in her novel, but "had long been concerned about slavery, having read the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Louis Clark, as well as the abolitionist tracts of L.M. Child and Theodore Weld, and in 1850, when the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, she began writing Uncle Tom’s Cabin." [The Fem GT Lit in Eng] The Fugitive Slave Act, in combination with her book, were arguably the catalysts for the Civil War, as even Lincoln implied upon meeting Stowe. The initial printing sold out immediately. Of the roughly 5000 copies of the first issue printed, 3000 are believed to have sold on the very first day. An amazing and unmatched achievement in 19th century book selling. Reissues appeared immediately, eight steam-powered presses were dedicated to this title by the publisher and yet they still failed to keep up with demand. By the end of the year over 300,000 copies were sold. Thus, true first issues are understandably very hard to come by. In fact, all of the early issues are very difficult to find in good condition. This was one of the most read, passed along, reread and passed along again books in history, certainly in American literature few other titles even come close. It is said that for writing this extraordinary bestseller Ms. Stowe was paid only $300. For her the battle against slavery was a God-ordained crusade to cleanse the United States of an Evil affront to Humanity. In the emotion charged atmosphere of 19th century America this novel exploded like an atomic bomb. For those opposed to slavery it was a testament to all that was wrong in an evil system. To the pro-slavery forces it was considered a slanderous attack on an established way of life. In either case, the impact of UNCLE TOM’S CABIN on the society of the United States of America was probably greater than any book published before or since.

Description: First edition, first issue. [iii]-x, [13]-312; 322pp. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with an autograph signature by Rev. Josiah Henson, Stowe's inspiration for Uncle Tom, in vol. 1, on The Christian Age letterhead and dated by the recipient 1876 and with an autograph letter, signed, by Stowe in vol. 2, to her publisher James Osgood. 2 vols. 12mo. With Rev. Henson's Autograph and Stowe A.L.s. tipped in. "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life.' Whatever its weakness as a literary work -- structural looseness and excess of sentiment among them - the social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than of any book before or since" (PMM). Published at the end of March 1852, 5000 copies of the first issue were published, with a second issue of an additional 5000 copies published on the first of April. By the middle of the month, both had been exhausted, with the publisher writing in the National Era: "Three paper mills are constantly at work, manufacturing the paper, and three power presses are working twenty-four hours per day, in printing it, and more than one hundred book-binders are incessantly plying their trade to bind them, and still it has been impossible, as yet, to supply the demand." By mid-October, 120,000 copies had been sold. The Stowe autograph letter, signed, inserted into this set is to her publisher James Osgood concerning an illustrated edition published by Houghton, Osgood, and Co. in 1878, reading in part: "Would it be any injury to delay the issuing of the book to the 13th of Jany - the reason is that Thursday I sail from Florida and should be out of the way of the noise of it. I am sick and tired of the fuss of the press that I want to escape it altogether. - There are three corrections that must be made in the plate proofs and I must trust you to see them done immediately .". STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin or Life Among the Lowly. Boston: John P. Jewett & Co., [1852], 1852.

Price: US$20500.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition, rare FIRST STATE in its original two volumes of this landmark social masterpiece, beautifully preserved in its original state. Both volumes in splendid condition, truly very near fine; an exquisite set of a monumentally important politically relevant, social and literary achievement by the author whom Lincoln called, "the little lady who started the great war." The author was compelled to write this novel by the 1850 passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, in which "all good citizens" (Northern as well as Southern) were commanded to assist Federal agents in capturing runaway slaves and returning them to their masters. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN was first published serially in the abolitionist periodical National Era, from June 1851 to April 1852. The book itself, in two volumes, was published in March 1852, prior to the end of serialization, and quickly became an enormous success. Unusually, the pages of both volumes are practically devoid of foxing and generally remain beautifully fresh and white. All in all, a handsome, splendid exampleof this hugelyimportant work, made even more important as it is accompanied by a 3.5" x 2.0" card with an autograph quotation by the author. In her hand the quotation reads: "Trust in the Lord and do good," which she has signed "HB Stowe" and dated it "Aug. 3, 1886". Deservedly and brilliantly presented in an exquisite custom-made full Morocco clamshell case. .

Price: US$25000.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition of arguably the most influential novel in US history, in the scarce publisher's extra gilt binding. Well educated in a large, abolitionist family, Stowe was already involved in anti-slavery activities by her early 20s, including participation in the Underground Railroad. With the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, the "number of kidnappings and forcible re-enslavements of black people was growing almost daily" (Hedrick, 205), and Stowe chafed at the tepid response of those around her: "You don't know how my heart burns within me at the blindness and obtuseness of good people on so very simple a point of morality as this [.] I feel as if my heart would burn itself out in grief and shame that such things are" (1 Feb 1851 letter to Henry Ward Beecher, quoted in Hedrick, 204-5). Having already written a few well-received anti-slavery pieces for THE NATIONAL ERA, Stowe was inspired to compose an anti-slavery novel through the urging of her sister, who had told her "if I could use a pen as you can, I would write something that would make this whole nation feel what an accursed thing slavery is" (quoted in Hedrick, 207). The result turned Stowe into "the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war," as Abraham Lincoln allegedly quipped (alas, apocryphally). Already deeply versed in the literature of fugitive slave narratives and armed with decades of firsthand experience assisting those who self-emancipated, Stowe composed a narrative that owed much to the actual experiences and accounts of formerly enslaved people. In A KEY TO UNCLE TOM'S CABIN (1853), published after pro-slavery advocates argued that scenes in the novel didn't happen or were exceptions, Stowe painstakingly documented sources employed in her novel, including THE LIFE OF JOSIAH HENSON, FORMERLY A SLAVE (1849); and THE NARRATIVE OF PHEBE ANN JACOBS (1850). First serialized in 1851 in THE NATIONAL ERA, UNCLE TOM'S CABIN was published in book form in March 1852. The first edition of 5000 copies immediately sold out, as did a second printing. The publisher remarked that "three power presses are working twenty-four hours per day, in printing it, and more than one hundred book-binders are incessantly plying their trade to bind them, and still it has been impossible, as yet, to supply the demand" (THE NATIONAL ERA, 15 April 1852). It appeared in a number of different binding variants (wrappers at $1.00, regular cloth at $1.50, and extra gilt at $2.00). The typical cloth binding features substantially less gilt than this rarer deluxe version. A lovely copy of the most desirable state of this social reform classic. Two 12mo volumes, 7.5'' x 4.5'' each. Original blue pictorial cloth elaborately stamped in gilt to spine and boards (BAL binding C, no priority). All edges gilt, cream endpapers. Illustrated with six full-page plates (three in each volume). x, 13-312; IV, 5-322 pages (complete; see BAL 19343). Housed in custom cloth chemise and slipcase. Pencil owner name "O. Dickinson" dated May 1852 to front endpapers. Later portrait of Stowe tipped onto front pastedown of volume I. Minor expert restoration to head and tail of spines, which are a touch sunned; light rubbing to boards. Careful hinge repairs, infrequent soil and foxing, primarily to margins, far less than usual. Sturdy and appealing.
