Stowe, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Toms Cabin. Milner and Sowerby, Halifax, UK, 1852.

Price: US$795.00 + shipping

Description: 1st Edition. Hardcover. STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Toms Cabin. Halifax, UK: Milner and Sowerby, 1852. Rare 1852 pirated edition of of this famous anti-slavery novel. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN or Negro Life in the Slaves States of America [Complete Edition]. 12mo., 326 pp (17cm x 10.5cm). Half black calf, gilt lettered & decorated spine. An attractive example of this obscure issue showing minimal use. "Beside the authorized edition published by Thomas Bosworth more than twenty pirated London editions appeared in 1852. In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth century America Uncle Toms Cabin exploded like a bombshell. the social impact. on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since". Printing and the Mind of Man 332 - Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published as a 40-week serial in National Era, an abolitionist periodical, starting with the June 5, 1851 issue. Because of the story's popularity, publisher John Jewett contacted Stowe about turning the serial into a book. While Stowe questioned if anyone would read Uncle Tom's Cabin in book form, she eventually consented to the request. Published by Jewett, Boston, March 20, 1852, the novel soon sold out its complete print run. A number of other editions were soon printed. The book eventually became the best-selling novel in the world during the 19th century (and the second best-selling book after the Bible), with the book being translated into every major language. The book sold equally well in England, with the first London edition appearing in May, 1852. It is now generally accepted that the C.H. Clarke edition was the first U.K. edition in book form, although Cassell's serial issue in thirteen parts was true first appearance. Bodsworth published an early edition in July/August of 1852 & regional publishers like Milner followed suit, this particular issue, often missing from completist collection. "The social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (PMM 332).

STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin. By Harriet Beecher Stowe. , 1852.

Price: US$2200.00 + shipping

Description: STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin. By Harriet Beecher Stowe. With Twenty-Seven Illustrations on Wood by George Cruikshank, Esq. London: John Cassell, 1852. In later calf, a. e. g. BAL 19518 (ref). Grolier 100, 61. Though frequently described as the first English edition, this is an early English edition, preceded by a Clarke & Co. imprint of 1852. This is an attractively bound copy with only light wear to the hinges. Previous owner name has been stamped in gilt on the bottom quarter of the front board. Contents are largely clean and all plates are present as called for, though one with discreet and sensitive repair to the back. A lovely copy of this early English edition. It is difficult to overstate the importance of Stowe's novel, at the time of its publication. The authors of Printing and the Mind of Man describes it thus, "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on `the Southern way of life.'. [T]he social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was great than any book before or since" PMM 332.

Beecher Stowe, Harriet. Uncle Tom's Cabin', UK true first edition in 13 weekly installments as originally published. John Cassell, 1852.

Price: US$8016.71 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Harriet Beecher Stowe (1852) ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin‘, UK true first edition, published by John Cassell in the original 13 weekly installments. Beautifully presented in a quarter leather bound protective box with the book details embossed on the spine. All 13 parts (201 x 131 mm). Title with woodcut vignette, woodcut frontispiece, 27 woodcut plates by George Cruikshank as called for. Original price of Twopence printed on the front covers. Condition: in nice condition considering the 170 years since publication. A little handling wear and creases. Internally clean. No restorations whatsoever. Back in the 19th century books (e.g. Alexandre Dumas, Charles Dickens etc.) were often published in monthly or weekly installments such as in the case of Beecher Stowe’s ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’. This way the author and publisher would charge the reader more money whilst the reader did not to have to spend a rather huge amount for a properly bound book in one go. The other advantage of this publication format was to keep the reader interested in the story. Once the installments were finished, readers had the option to get them bound into a book. Therefore, few specimen survive in their original publication format. We can trace very few surviving examples which have gone for sale in the past 20 years. Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a landmark novel and one of the most influential of American literature back in its time and to date. The novel spread the plight of slavery in America and abroad, and paved the way to the Civil Rights Movement and eventual Civil War. First and Fine
