POUND, Ezra. Umbra. Elkin Mathews, London, 1920.

Price: US$300.73 + shipping

Description: Octavo : pp. (6) 7-128 : leaves untrimmed : grey papered boards over cloth spine lettered in black. Spine is toned, small splash mark to lower corner of top board, which is also lightly bumped; dent to tail of top board; endpapers with patches of abrasion and marks consistent with a cover having been taped to the book then roughly removed; endpapers also toned; light foxing; previous owner name in ink to ffep and dated 1934; small Angus and Robertson sticker to front pastedown. A humble copy that despite cosmetic imperfections is still sound. "Ezra Pound is widely considered one of the most influential and most difficult poets of the 20th century; his contributions to Modernist poetry are enormous. He was an early champion of a number of avant-garde and Modernist poets, developed important channels of intellectual and aesthetic exchange between the United States and Europe, and contributed to important literary movements." (Poetry Foundation online) His engagement with the WWII axis of power caused endless debate about his politics and its place in his poetry, but few deny his legacy as an important and prolific poet and supporter of some of writers such as James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, W.B. Yeats, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, H.D., and Ernest Hemingway.

Pound's poetic farewell to London, published before leaving for Paris and turning to writing more or less nothing but cantos for the rest of his poetic career. With translations from Guido Cavalcanti and Arnaut Daniel and poems by T. E. Hulme. The poet Leolyn Louise Everett, whose book this was, was the daughter of Henry A. Everett, the railroad industrialist who introduced the street railway to Cleveland. After returning from Italy in 1914 she met the composer Timothy Mather Spelman (1891-1970) in New York. They married and in 1919 settled in Florence, where they bought the Villa Razzolini in the hills of Arcetri, which became a meeting place for intellectuals, perhaps among them Pound. N. B.
