Description: Text set in Monotype Baskerville, with Naudin and Le Champleve used for titling. Beige paper wrappers (a little creased), titled in reddish-brown on the front and spine. A very good set in a later slipcase. The Odyssey Press edition was the first to appear after Sylvia Beach gave up her exlusive right to publish Ulysses. It contained many corrections and by its fourth edition in April 1939 it was considered the most correct text of Ulysses even though it still contained errors. Odyssey Press was an imprint of Albatross Press and was set up in 1932 specially to publish Joyce's Ulysses. Albatross had been established in 1931 by John Holroyd-Reece, a publisher of art books at Pegasus Press, and Max Christian Wenger, who had worked for the renowned Tauchnitz publishers. The first book published in the Albatross Modern Continental Library in 1932 was Joyce's Dubliners, and thereafter Holroyd-Reece and Wenger bombarded Joyce with requests to bring out an edition of Ulysses

Condition: Very Good

Description: A scarce, first one volume cloth edition of James Joyce's leading modernist novel, 'Ulysses'. A first thus. The first one volume edition in cloth issued by the Odyssey press of Hamburg. This edition is composed in Baskerville type, and has been printed on thin paper by Papier-Fabrik Zum Bruderhaus.'Ulysses' was first issued in England in 1922 by Shakespeare and Company. With a later slipcase. The text of this edition has been edited by Stuart Gilbert, with assistance from Joyce. Therefore this work is one of the most important lifetime printings of Ulysses.Ulysses is an incredibly influential novel, and is a major work in the modernist canon. First serialized in the American journal 'The Little Review' before being published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach in Paris. A parallel of Homer's epic 'The Odyssey', Joyce's novel is set in 20th century Ireland and explores the relationship of the country's relationship with Britain. A beloved work by many, T.S Eliot referred to 'Ulysses' as being 'a book to which we are all indebted, and from which none of us can escape'. In the publisher's original cloth binding. In a later slipcase. Externally, very smart. A few light spots to the edges of the cream boards. Red text to the spine is slightly rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Faint aroma of cigar smoke to the work. Scattered spots to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, just the odd spot. Very Good

Joyce, James. James Joyce Ulysses Collection.. Various publishers 1932-1998, London and New York, 1932.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: Collection of several editions of Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses. The collection is comprised of a first American edition of Ulysses [New York: Random House, 1934]; early printing of the Unlimited edition of Ulysses [London: The Bodley Head, 1949]; the Odyssey Press edition of Ulysses in two volumes [Hamburg: The Odyssey Press, 1932]; early printing of the New edition of Ulysses in a dust jacket [London: The Bodley Head, 1967]; facsimile edition of the first edition of Ulysses housed in a custom full buckram box [Shelton: The First Edition Library, n.d.]; facsimile edition of the second edition of Ulysses [London: The Folio Society, 1998]; a first American edition of Finnegans Wake [New York: The Viking Press, 1939]; and two others. Each volume is in near fine to fine condition. A unique set illustrating the evolution of this great literary work. James Joyce's Ulysses was first published by Shakespeare and Company, Paris, in February 1922. Between 1922 and 1925 the text was reprinted six times. In May 1926, Shakespeare and Company issued a second edition (mistakenly called the eighth printing) in which the type of the text was entirely reset and Joyce's corrections from the previous printings were absorbed. Since its publication, the book has attracted controversy and scrutiny, ranging from an obscenity trial in the United States in 1921 to protracted textual "Joyce Wars". The novel's stream of consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental proseâ€"replete with puns, parodies, and allusionsâ€"as well as its rich characterization and broad humor have led it to be regarded as one of the greatest literary works in history.
