Description: Hardcover rebound cloth covered decorated boards with forest green leather spine and gilt lettering, all edges are deckled. Original blue paper wrappers printed with cream lettering on the cover with frontispiece b/w photograph of James Joyce, 732 pages plus 7 unnumbered page Errata. This is the first English edition published for The Egoist Press, London by John Rodker, Paris October 1922. This Edition is Limited to 2000 Copies on Handmade Paper Numbered from 1 to 2000 This Is Number 236. The endpaper states Printed By Maurice Darantiere at Dijon, France. Note: It is said that in the final months of writing Ulysses, Joyce would work on several chapters at a time-editing page proofs for early charters as he was still drafting the final ones. The printer Maurice Darantiere, set and reset and reset again the pages of the novel (in letterpress, no less), as Joyce made his thousands of changes to the text. Wikipedia cites the publication history *London: Egoist Press, 1922. The first English edition published by Harriet Shaw Weaver's Egoist Press in October 1922. For legal reasons the book was printed on behalf of Egoist Press by John Rodker using the same printer, Darantiere, and plates as the first edition. This edition consisted of 2,000 numbered copies on Dutch handmade paper for sale plus 100 ununumbered copies for press, publicity and legal deposit libraries. A seven-page errata list compiled by Joyce, Weaver and Rodker was loosely inserted and contained 201 corrections. The U.S. Post Office reportedly burned up to 500 copies, as noted in later editions". The exceptions to the condition are: p/o name(s) date and place on the ffep, loose frontispiece page, stain on the margin of pages 589-598 and wear to the extremities.

Description: The first british edition. One out of only 2,000 copies. Printed the same year as the first french edition, and printed in france by the same printer, this can technically be considered as the second printing of the first edition with a new london imprint. Handsomely bound and with the errata info bound in. 3/4 dark brown leather over red, tan, and black checkered pattern boards with marbled end pages. Pages are in very good condition, clear and bright throughout.

Technically printed in France, but for British private distribution.) [vi], 732 pp. Bound in publisher's printed wraps, on handmade paper. Copy #275 in a limitation of 2000. Near Fine with the fragile wraps in truly excellent shape; very rarely found unsophisticated with such little wear, especially on the spine, which typically has much, much more chipping and wear; no restoration done to it. Typical toning to contents, bump to bottom right corner with a hint of creasing. A literary milestone in wonderful shape.
