Conrad, Joseph. Typhoon and Other Stories. William Heinemann, London, 1903.

Price: US$122.38 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 1903. First UK edition. 2 pages of reviews of 'The Nigger of the Narcissus', [vi], 304pp. plus a 32 page publisher's catalogue. This is the first UK edition of Joseph Conrad's novel "Typhoon", and contains three additional short stories - Amy Foster, Falk: A Reminiscence, and To-morrow - which did not appear in the first American edition published in the previous year. The principal story, "Typhoon", is a classic sea yarn, possibly based upon Conrad's actual experience of seaman's life, and probably on a real incident aboard of the steamer John P. Best The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and gold titling within an illustration of a life-belt on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear on the boards and bumping to the spine ends with a little damage to the cloth at the bottom of the spine and top rear spine corner. The bottom corners are lightly bumped and there is a slight dent on the fore edge of the front board. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the endpapers. A previous owner appears to have neatly replaced a missing front free endpaper with the free endpaper from the back of the book. This has some of the mull binding the book showing through down the spine gutter between the last page of advertisements and the rear fixed endpaper.

Joseph Conrad. TYPHOON AND OTHER STORIES (AMY FOSTER, FALK: A REMINSCENCE, TO-MORROW) (First edition - first impression). William Heinemann, London, 1903.

Price: US$289.86 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First impression of the true first edition with all the correct issue points (as detailed below). Limited to 1,500 copies with the publisher's windmill device on the title page, and without "Reserved for Colonies" on the verso of the title page (which would indicate a later issue). The verso of title-page correctly reads: 'This edition enjoys Copyright in all Countries signatory to the Berne Treaty, and is not to be imported into the United States of America.' ***This first impression correctly has the two-pages of reviews to "The Nigger of Narcissus" to the fore, and the thirty-two page publisher's catalogue to the rear, and has the publisher's blind-stamped device to bottom corner of rear board (as called for). This UK first edition includes Joseph Conrad's final revisions to "Typhoon," which do not appear in the American first edition of 1902 (The novella "Typhoon" was published previously in America in 1902 by Putnam), therefore this first impression of the first UK edition is also a first edition thus, incorporating Conrad's final revisions to Typhoon. ***This UK first impression of the first edition is the correct Cagle's binding "B" (only two or three copies of binding "A" are know to exist). This copy has the fore-edge and the bottom edge of the text-block rough-cut, with the top edge of the text-block trimmed (as called for). Also it has the correct spacing of 10 mm as measured between "Conrad" and "Heinemann" on the spine of the boards as mentioned in Cagle A8b(1). ***Very good in dark slate-grey cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and gilt titles in a life-buoy design entitled S.S. Nan-Shan to the front board. Fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block rough-cut (as called for). ***Please note that there is a red ink mark running along the front edge of the spine of the boards, and to the bottom of the front pastedown, and at the very bottom of the first few pages. ***Contemporaneous owner's name and date in black fountain pen ink to front free endpaper: 'de Blaquiere III, 1903'. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Bottom corner of rear board slightly creased. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and creased. Offsetting to front and rear free endpapers. No foxing to pages. Pages clean. Slight reading lean to the binding but spine tight. ***196mm x 138mm. viii prelim pages including the two-page adverts for the Nigger of Narcissus and the half-title page, plus 304 text-pages and 32-pages of publisher's adverts to rear. The fore-edge of three of the catalogue pages to the rear are uncut (can be carefully cut open). ***The short stories are all nautical, based on Conrad's experience in the merchant navy. Typhoon is the story of a ship captain who struggles against nature. Joseph Conrad, who was an exile from Poland writes about the themes of migration and isolation, particularly in "Amy Foster" and "To-morrow." "Amy Foster" tells the story of an emigrated Polish woman coming to terms with living in England. "To-morrow" tells of the coming home of an elderly sailor's long-lost son. "Falk" is a story about a tug-boat master. His dark secret stops him from courting the woman with whom he is in love. ***The story "Typhoon" was originally published in a separate edition in the United States in 1902, but there was no English equivalent until 1912, making this its first appearance in book-form in England. ***First impression of the UK first edition, in very good condition, in its original cloth-covered boards. This first impression of the first edition of "Typhoon and Other Stories" is the true first publication in book-form of all the stories. Uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Conrad, Joseph. TYPHOON and Other Stories. , 1903.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Description: London: William Heinemann, 1903. 2 pp preliminary ads + 32 pp terminal ads, undated. Original dark grey cloth with front-cover life preserver in gilt. First Edition, first (i.e. non-Colonial) issue, limited to 1,500 copies. In addition to the title tale, the "other stories" are "Amy Foster," "Falk" and "To-morrow" ("Falk" is the tale that centers upon Conrad's often-recurring theme of cannibalism). "Typhoon" had been published in New York in 1902, prior to Conrad's final revisions that are reflected in the text of this English edition; the other three appear in book form for the first time here. This is a "pure" domestic copy, with the domestic half-title and title leaves; demand from British booksellers was so great that the binder subsequently had to create "hybrid" copies, transferring colonial copies to the domestic market and back again. It is in Cagle's binding "a" -- with 110mm between "Conrad" and "Heinemann" on the spine, and with the pages trimmed at the top edge only. This copy does include the 32-page ad catalogue that is present in some but not all copies. It is in close-to-fine condition (very slight cracking of the front endpaper). Cagle A8b(1).

Conrad, Joseph. Typhoon And Other Stories.. William Heinemann, London, 1903.

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Description: First English edition, first printing of this collection of stories, including the thrilling titular novella, “generally thought to inaugurate Conrad’s period of artistic maturity.” Octavo, original Cagle's binding A with only the top edge trimmed and with 110 mm between "Conrad" and "Heinemann" on the spine, with gilt titles to the spine and front panel. One of only 1500 of the 3000 copies issued in the first printing with the windmill device on the title page and without "Reserved for the Colonies only" on theÂverso of the half title, and including the 32 pages of advertisements at rear which appear only in some copies. After the New York publication, Conrad made final revisions to "Typhoon" before the present English publication which also includes three other stories, "Amy Foster", "Falk", and "To-Morrow". (Cagle, A8b; Smith, 9; Wise, 13). In fine condition. A superior example. Typhoon is most likely based upon Conrad's actual experience of seaman's life, and probably on a real incident aboard of the steamer John P. Best. The tale describes the exploits of Captain MacWhirr as he sails the s/s Nan-Shan, a British-built steamer running under the Siamese flag, into a typhoon in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. Other characters include the young Jukes (most probably an alter ego of Conrad from the time he had sailed under captain John McWhirr and Solomon Rout, the chief engineer). The novella classically evokes the seafaring life at the turn of the century. While Macwhirr, who, according to Conrad, "never walked on this Earth", is emotionally estranged from his family and crew, and though he refuses to consider an alternate course to skirt the typhoon, his indomitable will in the face of a superior natural force elicits grudging admiration. "This richly and consistently ironic tale is generally thought to inaugurate Conrad's period of artistic maturity" (Kermode, 9).

Conrad, Joseph. Typhoon, and Other Stories. London: William Heinemann, 1903.

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing. One of 1,500 copies. Publisher's dark gray cloth, with an illustration of a lifebuoy surrounding the title lettering to the front board in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Very good plus, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, light rippling to the panels, lacking the terminal publisher's catalog, spine lightly cracked inside the rear cover, otherwise sturdy and intact binding, former owners' inscriptions to the front endpapers, minor toning to the free endpapers, otherwise bright and clean interior. Overall, a pleasing and attractive copy. Wise 13. Typhoon is a collection of four short stories: "Typhoon," "Amy Foster," "Falk: A Reminiscence," and "To-Morrow." Each of the stories has a nautical setting and draws inspiration from Conrad's tenure in various merchant navies; "Typhoon," tells the story of a ship captain's struggle against the powers of nature. Additionally, Conrad's experience of exile from Poland manifests itself in the themes of isolation and migration found throughout the text, especially in "Amy Foster" and "To-Morrow." "Amy Foster" tells the story of an emigrated Pole adjusting to her new life in England, and "To-morrow" tells of the homecoming of an aging sailor's long-lost son. Similarly, "Falk" is about a tug-boat master whose dark secret prevents him from properly courting the woman with whom he is in love. Interestingly, the eponymous story "Typhoon" was originally published in a separate edition in the United States in 1902, but there was no English equivalent until 1912, making this its first appearance in book-form in England.

Description: First British edition, first impression, an extraordinary survival, the only known copy of this title complete with its original dust jacket and the earliest known jacket on any British edition of Conrad, the earliest hitherto recorded being Under Western Eyes (1911). Neither Wise nor Cagle record a jacket and no jacketed copy can be traced in commerce or auction records. One of the leading authorities on evolution of the printed dust jacket is Thomas Tanselle. In Tanselle's account, the modern style of printed paper dust jackets with flaps was firmly established as the predominant style of book covering from at least the 1860s. Paper dust jackets with flaps were useful because they allowed a customer to open a book in a bookshop without putting fingers on the decorative cloth binding beneath it. Early examples only rarely survive, however, because they were customarily discarded at the point of purchase. Some early jackets were plain paper, but publishers quickly filled up the space on the jacket panels with advertising. A few publishers experimented with jackets with a front panel design echoing that of the binding, but most jackets had typographic designs until the last quarter of the 19th century. As the present example shows, the fully typographic style persisted into the early years of the 20th. Tanselle notes that "Holes were frequently placed in the spines of jackets for series books, allowing the same jacket to be used for all volumes, since the titles of the individual volumes showed through the holes" (p. 77, n. 101). This was a cost-saving device and shows that the design of the jacket had not yet been conceived purely as a marketing tool for the individual book it protected. Tanselle gives a census of extant jackets on books published pre-1901, including another book published by Heinemann in 1897, Edmond About, The King of the Mountains, trans. Richard Davey (Tanselle census no. 97.53), which has the same style jacket, with a hole cut in the spine to allow the title and author's name to show through. William Heinemann Ltd was founded in 1890. The company published several works in series, including translations into English under the branding of "Heinemann's International Library", edited by Edmund Gosse. They also published the British version of Scribners' Great Education Series under the title Heinemann's Great Education Series. No doubt their familiarity with publishing series books in that era influenced their choice of jacket design. The company's relationship with Conrad began in the late 1890s, when Heinemann and the American publisher Frank Doubleday financially supported Conrad during his initial attempt at writing what eventually became The Rescue, and Heinemann was the British publisher for Conrad's The N***** of the 'Narcissus' in 1897. No dust jacket for the latter title is known to survive. These generic jackets, which were designed to be used for any title in the series, could theoretically be transferred from any other book in that series. Close examination of the various minute traces on both book and jacket demonstrates that this jacket has always been with this copy of the book. It would be difficult, in any case, to find another surviving jacket from the series, given the notable rarity of all British dust jackets before the Great War. One of the other titles from this series, Israel Zangwill's The Grey Wig, appears in auction records as early as 1904, yet no copy of that title down the years is noted as retaining the jacket. Similarly, Somerset Maugham's Mrs Craddock has a lengthy auction record, but no copy recorded in jacket. In a Parke-Bernet sale of January 1960, a job lot of Maugham first editions consisted of 13 works, all with dust jackets except for the earliest, Mrs Craddock. Likewise, the superb Somerset Maugham collection of Loren & Frances Rothschild did not have a copy of that book in jacket. Cagle A8b(1); Wise A13. G. Thomas Tanselle, Book-Jackets: Their History, Forms, and Use, 2011. Octavo. Original slate grey cloth, device to front board gilt, spine lettered in gilt, top edge cut, others untrimmed. With original printed dust jacket, die-cut towards head of spine as issued to reveal spine lettering. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box. With 32-page publisher's advertisements at end. Paper repair at head of jacket spine with small portion of paper supplied, light marking where old tape removed, still a remarkable survival, the book in fine condition.
