Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) founded his Roycroft Printing Shop in 1895 and created books treasured today for their craftsman style, fine bindings, handmade paper, and elaborately designed and decorated pages. Elbert and his wife, Alice were among the 1,198 passengers and crew who died aboard the S.S. Lusitania when it was torpedoed at the start of World War I.

PONs Wendell Haines and then Paul Haines of Albion, N.Y., to front endpapers. The front hinge is partially open, but holding. Six glossy B&W plates (including the frontispiece), as called for. 205 pp. followed by 4 pp. publisher's ads, including for Melville Davisson Post's "Dwellers In The Hills" (1901.) The 1940 film of the same title -- starring Dorothy Lamour as a kind of female Tarzan who grew up alone on a tropical island accompanied only by Koko the Chimp -- would appear to be unrelated. (We certainly HOPE it's unrelated.) Polish-born Joseph Conrad (Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, 1857-1924) is widely considered to be one of the greatest novelists ever to write in the English language. This is one of his shorter works. Reduced from $620.
