Bates, H[erbert] E[rnest]. THE TWO SISTERS . With a Foreword by Edward Garnett. Jonathan Cape Limited, London, 1926.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-320, original maroon cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. The authors' second book and first published novel. The prolific Bates was primarily a writer of short stories and in this field he was highly regarded by David Garnett and Graham Greene, among others. His style has been traced to the influence of Conrad (and thus of Henry James) and Stephen Crane, but his subject matter is definitely British, concentrating on the lives and tragedies of rural workers, occasionally touching on the theme of madness. Bates' stories appeared frequently in Edward J. O'Brien's annual anthology series, BEST BRITISH SHORT STORIES. NCBEL IV 520. Gawsworth, Ten Contemporaries II, p. 24. Neat owner's initials at top of front free endpaper. Top edge a bit dusty, a nearly fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with shelf wear and rubbing at edges, some age-darkening, and old internal tape mends at spine ends. (#128151)

Bates, H E. The Two Sisters - SIGNED by the Author. London Jonathan Cape 1926, 1926.

Price: US$480.32 + shipping

Description: A first edition, first printing published by Cape in 1926. Original maroon cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, bottom edge untrimmed. The authors' second book and first published novel. Softening of the spine tips and a touch of foxing to the top edge otherwise a near fine copy. The wrapper is also in near fine condition with a vertical crease along the full length of the spine and a touch of creasing at the spine tips. A lovely, bright and crisp copy. Unusually the wrapper has not had the small clips to all 4 corners and is ½ cm too tall for the book. One can only surmise that this is perhaps a proof dust wrapper of some sort. Clearly it has been folded in half at some stage and stored separately as it is really, bright and crisp. Signed by the author on the half-title. A superior copy of a book usually found to be in less than collectable condition. Very nice indeed. One of 1500 copies.
