Condition: Fine

Description: Original marbled paper covers decorated by hand, 26 unpaginated leaves, printed on rectos only, with title page, 12 woodcut illustrations printed in black, preceded by a title leaf printed in red and followed by a Hogarth Press publications list to the rear, all as called for. Binding rubbed, especially at the edges, but the fragile wrappers are nonetheless still in comparatively good condition and complete. 1955 ownership inscription pencilled inside front cover, very good and clean condition. The 13th title published by The Hogarth Press. Published in an edition of 150 copies, this first edition sold out in 2 days and the Woolfs printed thereafter two further editions, both of which lack however the coloured wrappers and the extra leaves with the titles of the woodcuts. One of the books Virginia wrote most about in her letters and diaries: "Roger again last night, scraping at his woodcuts while I sewed; the sound like that of a large pertinacious rat. We live in stirring days." (Diary, 12 April 1921). "[.] you must admit I`ve wasted a whole morning writing this letter, when I ought to have been stichting Roger`s woodcuts." (Letter to Vanessa Bell, 8 November 1921). "Roger`s woodcuts, 150 copies, have been gulped down in 2 days. I have just finished stitching the last copies - all but six." (Diary, 16 November 1921). "[.] we are in the frenzy of our Xmas publishing season - the first edition of Roger`s woodcuts sold out in 2 days, and another to be printed, stitched and bound instantly." (Letter to Katherine Arnold-Forster, 2 December 1921). "At this moment all my time is spent in stitching Roger Fry`s woodcuts. We sold our first edition in 2 days, and now have to provide a second in a hurry. It is very encouraging, but I wish we had a capable woman on the premises." (Letter to Violet Dickinson, 6 December 1921). "Roger`s woodcuts have gone into 3 editions; - I like to rub this in to show you how bad a bargain you made when you deserted us for marriage and the hills of Wales and the waters of the Wye." (Letter to Barbara Hiles Bagenal, 20 December 1921). The last title handprinted by the Woolfs with illustrations. Rare. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550

Condition: Very Good

Description: The first UK printing published by Hogarth Press , London in 1921. The BOOK is in Very Good condition. One of an edition of only 150 copies, hand printed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. 26 leaves, printed on rectos only, consisting of: title page, 12 woodcut illustrations printed in black, each preceded by a title leaf printed in red. Hogarth Press publications list to the rear as called for. Original marbled paper covers decorated by hand. Some offsetting from the cover turn-ins on the paste-downs. Free from inscriptions. Some rubbing and creasing to the yapped cover edges. Some splitting of the spine but the covers remain attached. Light age related markings and rubbing to the covers in places. Some toning to the paper label on the front cover but the label is complete. Internally the woodcuts are clean with just a hint of toning to the extreme page edges. Woolmer (13) quotes: 'Virginia Woolf in her diary entry for the 25th of November 1921 states : Roger's woodcuts, 150 copies, have been gulped down in two days. I have just finished stitching the last copies – all but six. By the way, Rogers (sic) cover paper was not designed by Carrington; I get it from a little man in Holborn; it is clearly an imitation of the Kew Gardens cover'. This title went into two further impressions, all printed by the Woolfs, in 1922, with the reprints bound in buff paper wrappers and printed on coated paper without the titles to the woodcuts. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover and housed in a custom solander box with gilt titling, marbled inserts and a silk tie. Very scarce. More images on request.
