Condition: Very Good

Description: New York: Boni & Liveright, 1919. "Although world-famous for his novels Sister Carrie and Jennie Gerhardt, Theodore Dreiser was also highly accomplished in journalism, autobiography, and travel writing. In 1919, having recently accepted the publishing contract of a new publisher, Boni and Liveright, Dreiser proposed to publish a "book of characters" that would collect twelve biographical sketches of individuals who were major influences on Dreiser, both as a man and as a writer. The resulting narratives combine the best attributes of the character sketch, the autobiography, and the short story into miniature masterpieces of prose." (University of Pennsylvania Press). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Dark blue cloth binding with yellow titling on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 360 pages. Bookplate on the front paste-down, and a small label on the rear. Minor rub to corners, top dusty, small spot on fore-edge; the spine has darkened but the lettering is perfectly clear. Lacking a dustjacket. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Dreiser, Theodore. Twelve Men (SIGNED). Boni & Liveright, New York, 1919.

Price: US$505.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 1919 copyright date matches date to title page; no later printings mentioned. Thus, the first printing as per publisher's 1928 statement. "Good" original dust jacket priced "$1.75 net" to spine; jacket chipped to corners, missing top 1/2-inch of jacket spine. Dated March 31 -- 1923 and signed (author's full name) to blank FFE. Contemporary newspaper clippings about this book -- and about Dreiser's partial authorship of the song "On the Banks of the Wabash" -- glued to front pastedown and (respectively) tipped to Rear Free Endpaper, which has resulted in offset browning to the facing prelim and final blank pages. Not fiction -- though some of the segments read like short stories -- but rather profiles of 12 men who were major influences on the author's life and work. While this title is not as sought-after as "Sister Carrie," signed Dreisers in original jackets from as early as 1919 are, needless to say, uncommon. 360 pp., reduced from $800.
