Description: First edition, first printing; 4to (305 x 223 mm, 12 x 8¾ in); black-and-white photographs printed in offset, toned; photo-illustrated adhesive-bound wrappers, corners lightly creased as often, other handling mark and a short tear at the foot of spine, a very good copy; [64]pp. Tulsa is a key work in post-war American photography, containing graphic photographs of sex, violence, and drug use in the Oklahoma suburb, much of which Clark participated in as well as documenting. Larry Clark was living with Gibson at the time, whom he introduced to Danny Seymour, a friend and neighbour of Robert Frank on the Bowery. Seymour paid for Tulsa to be printed, together with his own book, A Loud Song (1971), which Lustrum also issued. After this first edition sold out, Clark published two small editions himself. Gibson later clarified: 'What happened was that Larry always wanted to control the distribution of Tulsa himself. It was a difficult book, so when he was ready to publish it again it was his.' Description: Titled, dated, and signed in pencil lower middle on the verso by Clark, additionally inscribed with annotations of how the print was made with light box instructions and developing notes. Clark discusses his techniques in the book Darkroom (1977): referring specifically to Tulsa, he says, "I do a lot of burning and dodging when making a print and then use bleach. There's not a straight print in the Tulsa book. When I'm photographing I always try to shoot against the light. The film can't handle this and everything gets burned up, since I'm exposing for the shadows". This is one of two prints Clark made on this size paper; the other, which did not turn out so well, was simply noted "No good" on the verso. This image appears in Clark's book Tulsa, first published in 1971. Gelatin silver print photograph. Image size: 40 x 27 cm. Sheet size: 50 x 40.3 cm. Light horizontal crease across the middle of the image, light indentation to the right side, faint discolouration to the left. Very good condition.
