Condition: Near Fine

Description: Trending Into Maine; by Kenneth Roberts; with illustrations by N. C. Wyeth; Little Brown and Company, Boston, 1938. Published June 1938, first printing of trade edition, following a limited signed edition. This copy has a half-page, warm Christmas presentation, dated December 25th, 1938. Kenneth Lewis Roberts (1885 1957) was an American writer of historical novels. He worked first as a journalist, becoming nationally known for his work with the Saturday Evening Post from 1919 to 1928, and then as a popular novelist. Born in Kennebunk, Maine, Roberts specialized in regionalist historical fiction, often writing about his native state and its terrain and also about other upper New England states and scenes. Some of his better known works are Arundel (1929); Rabble in Arms (1933); Northwest Passage (1937); and Lydia Baily (1947). Newell Convers Wyeth (1882 1945), known as N. C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created more than 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books. He is the father of Andrew Wyeth and the grandfather of Jamie Wyeth, both well-known American painters. This book, 394 pages in in near-fine condition. The only faults are very minor bumps on the bottom corners of the book and slight discoloration on the top of the pages. The dust jacket is fair only, especially due to a missing segment on the spine of the dust jacket impacting the title. The front of the dust jacket remains nice and bright with issues along the edges. The dust jacket is now in a protective mylar wrap. A very attractive copy of a great book containing 16 Maine focused stories, presented as a Christmas gift.

Description: First Edition. Signed by the author, Kenneth Roberts on the flyleaf. With the printed slip: ÒCompliments of the Publishers - Little, Brown and CompanyÓ laid in. Additionally, laid in are Two Typed Letters Signed from Kenneth Roberts to the Maine State Librarian. Mrs. Marion Cobb Fuller, regarding the writing of Trending Into Maine. The finest one is dated October 18, 1937 and quoted only in part: Ò.I wish I could burst into wild enthusiasm over it for you. I canÕt, however, itÕs given me so much trouble at a time when I want to get started on a new novel. ItÕll be illustrated with fourteen paintings by N.C. Wyeth, and you know without being told what an excellent workman he is. ThereÕll be about fifteen chapters, covering such things as how a family got a foothold in Maine in the early days.the Maine cooking that I have always found so pleasing, gunning and fishing in Maine, seafaring people IÕve known.MaineÕs too big to be covered in a book of this sort.I hated to tackle it, but I committed myself to it two years ago, and I couldnÕt escape. I believe the publishers plan to to bring it out next June. I see youÕre curious about where I live. Take a look at the letterhead. Kennebunk Beach is the slum of Kennebunkport.Ó The second letter is earlier dated October 1937 asks Miss Fuller ÒWhat books or books would give me the best picture of Portland around 1803? If you have something pretty good about that period, will you let me look at it?.Ó Roberts thanks Miss Fuller at the beginning of the bookÕs finished text for her assistance in its creation. Fine in a lightly used price-clipped dust jacket with with a tear to the rear panel.
