The front pastedown is still vivid in color with the orange-red soldier and orange-red & black printing on a deep beige background. There are some small dried brownish stains but they are quite small. The deep green boards have minimal wear, mostly some rubs at the spine ends. The interior is very nice and clean with the merest of page darkening save for a bit on the ffep. A very tight clean collectible!

An American anti-German propaganda book also meant to function as a humorous story concerning baseball, a WWI soldier's experiences at the front, and his attitudes towards coming home. Bruccoli I 223. Johnson 309. ADNB, Joy Castro, "Latimer, Margery Bodine, (06 February 1899-16 August 1932)". Margery Latimer's copy, with her signed bookplate on the front pastedown and a gift inscription to her on the free front endpaper. Latimer also pasted in a newspaper cartoon, of a dog standing on top of a tank. The cartoon is captioned: "Treat 'Em Rough is the slogan of the tanks. Jack the Kaiser Killer is not a Tank but he likes the ring of the slogan." Latimer was an early twentieth-century Midwestern feminist and author of controversial books such as This is My Body. Her stories challenged traditional conceptions of gender and family dynamics. She was the subject of a miscegenation scandal because of her marriage to Jean Toomer. She died in childbirth at the age of 33. A Near Fine book lacking its dust jacket with minute rubbing to the textblock and a spot of offsetting on the rear free endpaper.

Description: First edition, second issue with 18 line poem. Illustrations by Frank Crerie. An attractive near fine example in decorated boards. This copy has a tipped in typed letter from Lardner on Newbegin's Booksellers & Imports stationary. One page. Dated October 1918 and addressed to Dear Mable and with a typed sign-off as "Jack the Kaiser Killer by Ring W. Lardner". Letter is not signed other than what has been typed. Letter was written from his Army barracks. Letters from Lardner are quite elusive.

Description: First edition. The briefest of brief TYPED LETTERS SIGNED on letterhead of Chicago Tribune where he worked for years, dated August 30th (no year) "Dear Mr. Hanson:- Sure. Ring W. Lardner." First issue without the poem by H. H. Howland on page 6. Small 8vo green cloth stamped in red on spine; pictorial plate affixed to front cover. Dust jacket printed on brown kraft paper with gummed edge on verso of front flap; designed to serve as a wrapper for mailing. Very good or better with endpapers darkened and spine toned but otherwise only minor wear; in good to very good dust jacket with shallow chipping and tears and internal archival tape repair to splits at folds and spine. Scarce signed.
