Description: xix,(1),331 pp. Octavo. Bound in a 19th century half green calf and marbled boards binding. Matching corners. Spine ruled in five raised bands. Gilt decoration and title. Original endpapers with a 20th century bookplate on the front pastedown. 36 engraved illustrations, some full-page. Folding map. A very clean, tight copy. AB 19424. Whymper was an artist working on the Western Union Telegraph expedition of 1865-66. First five chapters deal with his travels in British Columbia, including Vancouver Island in 1864. Remainder covers his voyage to Sitka, Petropavlovsk, Chukotka, St. Michael, and up the Yukon River to and beyond Fort Yukon. There is an American edition a year later. This UK edition is much scarcer and of superior quality.

Whymper, who was the artist on the expedition, describes their journey and experiences at Vancouver, Sitka, St. Michael, Norton Sound, Kamchatka and the west coast of the Okhotsh Sea, the Yukon Territory, their ascent and descent, by canoe, of the Yukon River, &c. Also included are remarks on fishing and the fur trade, the Russian and Indian settlements in Norton Sound, and the manners and customs of the Tchuktchis and the Co-Yukon Indians. The first five chapters contain the author’s reminiscences of his travels in British Columbia in the 1860’s, including an account of his trip to the interior of Vancouver Island in 1864 with Robert Brown’s exploring expedition, and details of the Bute Inlet massacre.
