Description: Original bound wrappers. The premiere issue of Transition, a magazine of art and literature first edited by Eugene Jolas. Distributed out of Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Co. bookstore in Paris. Notable in many ways including the first appearance of the first section of Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce plus contributions by writers and artists such as Hart Crane, Marcel Noll, Pavel Tselitsieff, Max Ernst and many more. Front cover loose from binding. Several small chips to cover edges. Internally clean, unmarked and still decently bound. A rather fragile production. Transition ran from 1927 to 1938 and included 27 issues. Intended as an outlet for experimental writing with a heavy emphasis on surrealist, expressionist and Dada artists.

Description: Two issued bound together by Bayntun in full tan calf with gilt frames, ornate gilt spine panels with gilt-stamped title on a black morocco label, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Pp. 185, [5] adverts; [183], [6] adverts, 2 double-sided black & white plates in No. 2 and also in No. 3. Bound without the original wrappers and without the half-title to No. 3, pages tanned as usual. Joints rubbed, outer corner of No. 3 title-page missing with loss to the year, professionally repaired. A beautifully bound, handsome copy of two early issues of this important literary review produced in Paris in the twenties. Sylvia Beach in her book "Shakespeare and Company, talks of 'transition': "All the best Anglo-Saxon and European work of the period appeared in it, much of it for the first time. Of all the reviews I came in contact with, 'transition' was the most vital, the longest-lived, and the review that I felt was most intelligently devoted to the interests of new writing."
